Hello guys I could use some help/advice, I went on a 2-3 hour drive yesterday (nothing weird about that) but right toward the end I went up an incline, nothing too steep just an ordinary road and it felt like there was no turbo, the car was really sluggish as though the turbo had just cut out, as I have the diesel engine you can imagine how little power there was without it, ok I factored in some possible causes:

The weather has been pretty crappy here in the uk, lots of snow and sub zero temperatures, and as such I was driving in a low gear for a long time around 2k rpm
could the turbo have overheated?

low oil level? the dipstick is hard to read at the best of times, I checked it on the return journey when the engine was hot and the level was low, so I topped it up

consequently on the return journey after the car had cooled down the turbo now seems fine

is it safe to drive the car with a crappy turbo, if not what damage can be caused?

any help appreciated, thanks:eek:

Not really sure what to reccomend--- I've had a bit of a missfire but not lack of power--Maybe oil starvation to the Turbo ( They need oil for cooling ). & you say its ok now! Yep & I agree The dipstick is a bugger to read correctly , it was the same on my Caliber.

yeah I am kinda thinking along the oil route, the car is booked in for its 18k service at the end of this month, but I am tempted to get it in early in case the turbo is damaged, will there be any damage to the engine itself if driven whilst the turbo is playing up?

Not sure about still running it ( Not a lot of help am I?) However an early service wouldnt hurt. I had my 18.000 miler 1000 miles early !A phone call to your dealer wont hurt -just to get their advice.

If when you try to accelerate you can hear a lot of noise and no oomph then th hoses for the turbo have come loose. Mine did this, and I rang Jeep Assist and they came out and put it back on. Try opening the window and accelerate hard, if you hear a loud hiss, this is the most likely cause.

As explained to me, Jeep use rubbish clips to hold the hose in place, not jubilee clips and they can work their way loose.

Thanks for that Info Ash!!--Thats worth all us CRD guys remembering---Cheers!!!

I had the same problem with my CRD, at first it was a little hesitation problem every now and again, this got worse happening more and more and instead of the odd hesitation it would be for or five in a row mainly at about 3000 revs. I kept taking it in and they did a few things with the fuel pipes but it got worse until it just went! I called out Jeep assist who said that there was oil all over the bottom of the engine and there wasn't any oil in the engine (but no oil light came on) so it was towed into the garage... They 'fixed' it and said the Turbo had gone and replaced it... 3 days later it went again no power on acceleration unlike when it 1st started happening it didn't matter what the revs were it was just crawling.. so it went BACK in. This time they replaced the Fuel Filter... they said mine was the 4th Pat they had done this on... they said it is something they're having to introduce into earlier services as it’s a common problem!

Ever since - 3 weeks- (touch wood) no misfire/hesitation problems! Also my fuel consumption was BAD! 140miles on ÂŁ60 Diesel (ouch!)

I hope this helps... Tan

Thanks a lot Tan, it sounds exactly the same as mine last week, at first I thought it was oil starvation to the turbo, due to low oil level (as the dipstick is difficult to read)I will defo get the garage to change mine on spec when it goes in for its 18k service in 2 weeks

Yep I noticed in the Drivers Handbook That the Fuel filter isnt due to be changed untill the 3rd service at 27,000miles---I going to have to have a word with my dealer!!

Hope I helped and stopped you have the misery I had to put up with.

I only use Shell or BP just cos thats all around here... mine only has 12k on the clock.. can you imagine waiting until 27K!!

My wifes Pat loss power today and could hardly climb a hill and then regained power it has covered 22000 miles and looks as if the fuel filter has never been changed from leaving the factory.Got fuel filter from dealer , changed in 10 mins and test drove , goes like a rocket now.

My missfire was toatally cured by a New Fuel filter. The tech told me they had also done a fuel line mod that Jeep recommended, not sure what it was , but if you did yours yourself you wouldnt know about the mod...i dont think it was too important , just a bit of a fuel delivery upgrade. The filter isnt supposed to be replaced untill 27,000 miles , but Jeep have realised that its a bit too long & now recommends 18,000.

Sorry to hear of such problems with those praised VW diesels ... dead turbos, lags, power loss, missfires, cloged fuel filters and what have you ... one would think that these german made engines are reliable and trouble free. Fortunately I have the petrol 2,4 "world engine" model ;)

Just a uneducated guess but could the lack of oomph when accelerating be caused by inadvertantly hitting the shifter and accidentaly downshifting? I like to drive with my hand on the shifter and typically only use the downshift thing once a day, but I have nudged it once or twice myself and all the sudden find myself in 3rd gear with no oomph until I push it to the right and it goes into drive.
