We're planning a road trip this summer from southern Ontario to BC and back.
Would like to take in as much of the road side attractions as possible along the way.
Has anyone taken this trip before in thier Patriot? How did it perform?
Is there something along the way that we should definitely not miss?

Wow travel ideas, should get lots of ideas. Do you want to stay in Canada or will you get travellers insurance to go down south.
Jasper more impressive than Banff (IMHO)
Have you ever been to a small town rodeo?
Should every Canadian be required to stop at the Terry Fox monument outside of Thunder Bay?
A stop at the zoo known as Taylor Field in Regina

Stateside ("close" to the border)
Mt. Rushmore
Yellowstone
going to the sun highway glacier national park

Jasper is better scenery wise... Banff is better Party wise :p but you should definitely drive the Icefields Parkway that runs between Banff and Jasper National Parks. Olympic park in Calgary is worth a visit as is the good ole West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton!

Don't drive through the states. Every SW Ontarian needs to make the drive north through Barrie, Thunderbay, Fort Frances etc... You will not believe how big a province you live in. After finally getting out of Ontario, the Prairies fly by.

If you haven't been on the Chichimon ferry to Manitoulin island, that's a must. Also plan to spend a day or two in the BC Okanagan valley sampling wine and fruit. Penticton is a beautiful area. Oliver/Keremeos is even nicer, but more "small town".

The Terry Fox monument is part of the reason for the trip!!! So It's already on our list.
Mt. Rushmore is a great idea - thanx!

We actually plan to go out there via Canada and come back via the US.
BC Okanagan valley sounds intoxicating... hehehe

Take a look at the Drumheller valey, in Alberta! A must!

Drumheller is a great idea. Don't miss the world class Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology.
A scenic alternate route through the Rocky's is to turn onto highway 23 just west of Calgary, and go south to Bragg Creek, where many western movies are shot. Don't miss Elbow Falls. Then south on #23 (called the Cowboy Trail) to highway 3, which runs east and west across southern Alberta. Detour to Waterton National Park, then through the Crowsnest Pass into BC. You can go on #3 into south-central BC, then up through the Okanogan and join up with the Trans-Canada. Gorgeous scenery all the way.

I'm planning a similar trip this summer and fall, from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland. I'll be doing it in my motorhome, and hoping the old thing is up to the task. I want to stay off the Trans-Canada as much as possible.

I'd also suggest a stop at 'The Greatest Show on Earth', The Big Four Building is full of history, as well as the Saddledome. But don't take it from me, I just work there...

You're going from Southern Ontario to BC and back; so you'll be away two or three days then, eh.....?
hehehehe - ya.
We're actually going for about two weeks (16-17 days).
My wifes parents live in Kelowna and it's her mothers 70th B-day this year. We've always talked about driveing out west and now we have an excuse.

Niblips, will you be driving through Kenora? If you are, take a couple of of photos for me and post them on, please. My mother, Valerie, was actually from Windsor Ont. but she lived for a year or two in Norman, which is a part of Kenora. The name Kenora sounds so genuine Indian, doesn't it? It's not, though; it's made up of KEewatin, NOrman and RAt Portage, the three little villages that grew together to make it! I've never been there in my life, but I'd appreciate a photo!

Actually I think we will be driving through Kenora. Apparently there is a large Spider made out of a VW Bug in Kenora. I want to show my wife. She's a VW Bug enthusiast.

Nielchrichton head straight across to NFLD and plan to spend a lot of time there. We spent 3 months across Canada and the Eastern states. 5 weeks on NFLD and that was not long enough. Get over there as soon as you can to see the icebergs. Also take the ferry over to Labrador for a few days, dirt cheap, only 48 bucks one way and I was 50 feet total length. Visit the rest of Canada on your way back.

You should take the leap over to vancouver island! mind as well go all the way!

Excellent camping/hiking/fun.

Check out: tofino/uculet, tube down cowichan river (camp at the skutz falls tenting site(mega party site). and victoria if your in to old people stuff.

Thanks for the tips. Does that ferry price include a vehicle? The Vancouver Island ferry is $178.00 one way for my RV. BTW, I was in NF for two years as a baby. My dad was in the navy during the war. Apparently, I even rode on the (in)famous "Newfie Bullet".

The Newfoundland tourist bureau advertises heavily on tv around here. It looks absolutely gorgeous. I'm looking forward to it.

I'll second that. In Victoria, don't miss Buchert's Gardens, which must be one of the most beautiful displays of flora on earth. Go late afternoon, stay until after dark. The gardens are all lit up at night. And bring your camera.
