i was looking around and found a few threads about roof baskets, with a few pics, i think a yakima and a valley basket, and a video. But i was wondering if everyone could post pics of your roof baskets, specially if you carry a spare.

i'm thinking about getting one next weekend and putting my spare tire there, but i want to see what different roof baskets look like, and thought it would be nice to have all the pics and maybe videos from different members in one thread.

We put our spare on our roof rails WITHOUT a basket for our trip to MI. Worked GREAT! Didn't seem to affect mileage at all either. If all you're looking to put up there for now is the tire, I'd say, go for it without the basket.

Dawson do you have pics of how you rigged your spare tire up there, never thought of that, always thought it would require a roof basket. You said no decrease in mileage, any additional noise?

Unfortunately, I lost my camera and didn't get pics. I just threw it up there and used a ratchet strap criss-crossed over it, wrapped around the bars to hold it down. We started to notice some vibration noise from the strap after half the trip, but we tightened down the strap and no more issue. I also used a chain and padlock to secure the back of the tire to the cross-rail.

my spare will be there permanently, except when i take the kayaks to the lake.

Just curious why permanently? We threw ours up there to gain space during our road trip for additional cold weather gear - we had three humans and three dogs inside with gear. Otherwise, we've never needed the extra space. That is the first time we ever put it on the roof, and we've been camping a LOT with two dogs. I'm more concerned with someone slashing it on the roof, and us not knowing it until we need it - or stealing it, cutting a lock is quick.

Also, the spare is pretty large, and with a basket would you be able to get the kayaks on too?

well, i use my trunk space a lot, i dont like to have crap all over my seats. i thought about the stealing thing and slashing, i would put a lock on the tire, and i figure that no one steals the ones from jeep wranglers and they are right there, easy to reach, and they are usually bigger and nicer tires than the ones you can put on a patriot.

do you think this might work?: http://tiregate.com/hg_series_0.shtml

I Emailed them and asked for the measurements, i wouldnt want the spare to block my lights.

I haven't gotten around to putting pics up in my roof basket link in my signature, but I'm sure I have pics in my album.
