I'm planning to change my engine oil for the first time tomorrow. Can anyone please provide me the correct wrench size for the oil drain plug?
It will help a lot my planning because I don't have much time tomorrow morning for doing this.

tks.

ok 13 mm. I prefer having the exact size. This avoid stripping the bolt.

tks all for your help !

Perfect size is 1/2 inch, not 13 MM

13 MM is bigger than 1/2 inch, so if a 1/2 inch fits, using a 13mm would lead to a greater chance of rounding off the bolt.

The big issue is the filter, its not a standard autoparts filter size. Be sure you have the right one before you start. (wrench that is)

A Guy on Caliber Forums complained that some service Tech had managed to strip the lands off his filler plug , making the head round. He said the tech was using a power gun with the wrong size socket in it. I would have thought that the correct size hand cranked ring-spanner would have been adequate for this job??

I just done the job this morning. The filter was tight as hell. I had to buy a strap to remove it.

On all my previous cars and my girlfriend Explorer, I never had to use a tool for removing the filter, only by hand. I think it was way too tight by the factory guys...

The next one will be easier to removed, since I only tight it very hard by hand only.

I have the 4 volume factory service book set issued by Chrysler for this car...13 mm and torque to 30 ft. lbs. The drain plug even says "Metric" on the head of it. All car mfrs converted to MM in the 1980's for all fasteners...like lug nut are now 19mm and so on.

you should never use a power gun to remove a oil plug ,you could strip the plug or worse the oil pan. i'm talking about the treads.

If you've got a cheap wrench, a 1/2" will fit on a 13mm head. Try it with a Snap-On wrench, and it won't work. If you want to strip off a head, start with a cheap wrench! (P.S. I use Snap-On at work, because they provide our tools. At home? Craftsman!) If you are REALLY concerned about stripping the head off, use a 6-point socket and ratchet!

both mine and my wifes patriot oil filters were unbeleiveably tight from the factory. Had to use a strap wrench to get both off, broke one of those plastic sockets before turning to the strap.
I guess the factory folks dont have to read the manuals....hand tight plus 1 turn :0
