Im looking to change over to AMSOIL 5W20 Extended Life, and Im looking for a oil filter which will safely last the 12,000K's.

Any suggestions?

If I need to change the filter halfway threw, I might as well change the oil at the same time.

Did they just release that AMSOIL filter?

Amsoil was the first company I checked for a high milage filter and at the time didn't have one. I guess they do now! :smiley_thumbs_up:

It's been out for at least a year, maybe longer. Good stuff, but the Mobil 1 is fine too. I tend to mostly use Napa Gold, though I did put a Mobil 1 on my Patriot last time.

Before even seeing this thread... I decided to consider the Amsoil oil and filter both. I will be making the switch in about 1800 miles or so.

They released the filter to match the longevity of the oil.

I am looking at 0w30 (at about $10/qt.) and their filter which will be about $13. That makes the change approximately $65 and they guarantee 25,000 or 1 year. If I decide to do the one year, I will send in a sample for analysis after the year to see how the oil fared.

I would recommend visiting:

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/opinions.html

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

Both these sites have excellent information, the first site specifically addresses the oil filter.

The problem with shooting for an extended drain interval (i.e. 12,000 km) regardless of how good the oil is you still have to rely on the filter and deal with external contamination. Even if the oil does not breakdown you may still have issues.

One other point, you may want to opt for a 5w-30 vs 5w-20 if you are looking for engine protection and an extended drain interval. (See BITOG)

Mobil 1 EP 5w-30, Penzoil Platinum 5w-30 and Amsoil 5w-30 would likely all cover you just fine to 10,000 km, even if you fall into maintenance schedule "B".

There was a good test somewhere online where a guy tested the amsoil super oil filter thing and the extended drain intervals. He sent the oil for analysis every 5k miles. I believe what happened was the oil was indeed still within spec at the 25k mile test, but his 10w30 had thickened to a 20w50 weight oil. So their conclusion was yes you can, but they didn't recommend it.

I like everyone's ideas, and it's good to see that a lot of people are realizing the importance of a good oil filter. For me I've been using Baldwin Oil Filters for the last three years, that's just because Amsoil hasn't come out with their EAO Oil filter for the Pat. Now it looks like they've finally come out with it EAO50 is the part number. I've been using Amsoil 5W30 Full synthetic since the first oil change, love the stuff, and will never switch, until the car gets 200K Mi. on it and it starts to leak, then I'll go back to conventional to thicken the oil to stop the leaks.

Good luck bullet, happy trails

You can do a UOA and see how your oil is holding up. If the insolubles are still low, your filter is working okay. Plenty of UOA's on BITOG with extended intervals showing low insolubles.
The jury is still out, at least on BITOG about the 5W30 providing more protection than 5W20. Terry Dyson says that's a completely false assumption. And remember, not everybody on BITOG is an expert--at anything. There's some accurate information, there's also a lot of guessing, and a lot of just plain BS.
