I have been thinking of redoing my current vehicle line up. We have the minivan and the jeep both fca products. Funny enough, I have only been buying fca products and haven't bought anything else. They are just such a great deal (when you buy used). I will be keeping the minivan, but maybe not the patriot.

Anyways, I need to decide if I should go get a real worthy off road vehicle (xterra, grand cherokee, or wrangler) or just buy a little commuter car and just rent one when I need it. I go off roading probably 3-4 times a year and it would be nice to have a 4wd / awd vehicle for snow.

Well, you might enjoy an Audi or something along those lines for commuting, or maybe a slightly older pickup with decent mileage. My parents get 25mpg in the 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 Duramax once owned by my late grandfather. Just pleasepleaseplease nothing with a backup cam or autolights, etc. Then if you really wanted to go offroad, you could rent a Wrangler, ride with a friend, or save up and buy a trailer queen CJ/YJ/TJ or something.

sounds like a good time for a project car :)
not a car you really need, but fun to have,
or maybe depending on what type of offroading you do, a car like jeep renegade? a quirky little car that seems to have some personality.

So, I don't know how much room you have to have extra vehicles, but I have enjoyed having a comfortable car as a daily driver (my Infiniti Q50), and my truck (Mazda B4000) as my 4x4/off road/haul vehicle. My truck gets driven once every couple of weeks, if that often, but I'm so glad I have it. And I picked it up for less than $2500, it costs so little to insure, so little to maintain that I honestly think I would spend more money renting than I do keeping the truck. I have a bed cover for it, and planning on getting a car cover for it, so it won't get as dirty sitting there waiting to get used.
