I'm about to try some off-road driving at a local 4x4 club, which looks cool, but my current tyres are not off-road.

I have two all-season or summer Michelin tyres on the back of the jeep, which the owner I bought it from had put on; they're top of the range tyres costing about £170 ($230) per tyre. I had two on the front too till 10 days ago when I had a puncture and just decided to get two brand new tyres put on the front, as the tread was getting down to around 1.6mm on the outer edge anyway which is the UK legal limit. The two tyres now on the front are these I think - Cooper Zeon CS Sport - Tyre Reviews but 215/65/r17 I think

So I'm thinking of getting some complete off-road wheels put on, and then I'll just take em off and put back my normal tyres when I'm done with the off-roading. What do ya'll think of these?

Or would it be a better option to buy some second hand off-road tyres off ebay or some place else, as I'm not gonna have these on the car that often?

I will just say that I have driven through some relatively thick mud with the above tyres on and so far my Patriot has done this with ease. My old VW Polo would have got stuck.

Those Goodyears look like SilentArmors, which were discontinued a few years ago. I wanted some pretty bad, but figured I should make other plans due to availability, and they have a two-ply construction while BFGoodrich is known for 3-ply and ALOT of off-road wins. Maybe they kept the SilentArmors in production for Europe, or maybe that website still has them in stock from that time. Or maybe they're not actually SilentArmors, just the same tread, but from what I'm seeing that looks unlikely.

These are the tires I would trust the most under my Jeep, for any type of weather or terrain, and in a size that I know will fit the Patriot.....

This is one of my other top choices.....

In the end, it's really up to what you want, but I know there are alot of people in the United States and Canada who have used the KO2's linked on their Patriots and loved them. A few have the Discoverer AT3 and find it closer to "civilized", but also well worth the money. Both will conquer dirt and asphalt with near-equal ease from what I hear. SREJECT here on the forums has KO2's on his XJ(1984-2001 Cherokee) and Discoverer AT3's on his Patriot, and likes both. Plenty of pictures on the "Jeep Patriot Around The World" facebook group if you're on there.

Also, if you have the 17-inch wheels, 225-65-17 is the largest you're guaranteed to be able to fit any tire(on a NA model Patriot anyway) without any rubbing, and 235's with some rubbing on most tires but no rubbing on a select few.

Thanks man, I will def have a think about this. Personally, I'd rather get a brand new set of four off-road tyres fitted, and then take them off when I'm going to work/not going off-road, which is most of the time. Just bear in mind, at present I have a job which requires me to commute 45 miles each way every day (so 90 miles per day) and that's mostly all on highways here. I am thinking of moving closer to my place of work, over the next few months, though.

My colleagues at work suggested it may be a better idea to go to a used-tyre yard or whatever they call it, and find a cheap set of used off-road tyres so I don't have to spend out hundreds on a new set of tyres I won't use that often, but is that a good idea? Surely if I get a new set of 4x4 tyres, and take em off when I'm not off-roading, they will keep, right? Of course I'd have to stick em in the garage and keep em protected, as I'm guessing if there's a small mouse knocking about, that thing will gnaw into the tyres? But otherwise, they would keep right, apart from just deflate a tad over time, and then I can just inflate them back up before I use them again.

Thanks for the two links though, I like the look of the KO2's but the Cooper's do save a bit of money, although their EU rating on fuel efficiency and wet grip isn't great at grade E. Nonetheless, I'd maybe save a bit of money and go with them.

BTW, my current tyres at 215 size I think, so those 235's I know would be too big, I just googled off-road tyres last night without properly putting the size in, but if you say 225's will fit, I'd go with that.

I like to have a set of tires to run year-round, and both the tires I showed you should wear decently and still be good with on-road grip. Noise might be a little bit higher than with regular street tires, but the tire companies are getting better with that, especially with BFGoodrich from what I hear. The companies know that most people can't afford two sets of tires, and it can get annoying to swap them out just for a weekend every month, so they make tires that do very well on and off the road. I'm wanting to turn my Patriot into an escort vehicle for oversized loads this coming spring, and would gladly invest in a set of KO2's anyway, knowing I'll be putting a few thousand miles per month on my vehicle and that the tires in question are 13 pounds(5.9 kilograms) per tire heavier than what I currently have installed. Plus BFG has a very well-deserved reputation, and I'm told that the KO2 more than lives up to it.

However, for wheeling so little and being worried about noise, the Coopers or something similar may work better for you. They're also a little lighter. I sent a facebook message to SREJECT alerting him to this thread. Knowing him he can tell you exactly what he's experienced with both tires sometime in the next 48 hours.

That would be awesome to see a patriot as a pilot vehicle, so if doing lots of highway miles would a lighter tire be more appropriate or not? If you want the look of the BFG's that is hard to argue with.

I've been looking at the Continental Terrain Contact AT for a not offroad tire but still could do a bit offroad while still looking decent.

The 2 sizes that would be relevant for you are 225/60/17 (27.8lbs)
245/65/17 (33.7lbs)

Tires I Picked

Hey all , I picked a set of wheels with the help of some
posts here from Discount Tire .
LT215/75R15 DYNAPRO HANKOOKS MT RT03
15X7 MBM CHAOS RIMS
I did notice the Whirrrrrrrrrrrrl when you go slower ,
Highway speeds not so bad , But I want my 7-11 coffee when it
snows here in VA.

I got in a bit of a pinch recently when one of my LE2's went flat, but knew I'd need to change 'em sometime soon anyways. Had to get tires quick and I couldn't afford much, so I stuck Firestone "All Season" tires on it in my stock size, P215/65R17. They should last a couple years, so I'm good for now.

And yes, still Baja dream/plan, but that takes $$$$$$$$$$$ that I don't have and nobody's just gonna hand over(unless you guys wanna ante up?), and as an oversized load escort I can make money pretty good, and actually have a vehicle small enough to play tourist when around the country. Already seen some Patriots doing the job, but none set up anything like mine, heheheh. Nice to have something that I can go into the dirt without worries anytime I want, ya know?
