About to buy a Patriot.....

Hello,
Newbie here. I'm going to look at a Patriot tomorrow. What do you think...Sport or Limited? Is the Limited worth the extra cash?
What color...Red, black or possibly white?
Does it really get the good gas mileage?

I have a Sport with a lot of the available options - none of which I regret getting. For that reason, I think the Limited is worth it if it is in your budget, and a definite if you really like leather seats and also would pony up for a sunroof (at least in '07 you had to get the Limited to have the option to buy the sunroof).

I got the Sport because the Yes Essentials fabric intrigued me - it's good stuff.

Thank you for your input. I'm a little upset about what I read about the mpg, and the small tank. But more important is the maintenance factor. Seems like Jeep people love their jeeps. It will be my first, and I hope it is as maintenace free as my Matrix (the ugliest car on the road!)

If you put all the same options on a Sport, it will cost just about the same as a Limited. The Limited will be a bit more, because of the leather, front and rear fascias, chrome instrument gauge surround, etc. But option for option, price will be very close.

My commute is not during rush hour, and I use a light foot to accelerate, coast down hills and toward red lights, and can easily make 25-26 mpg around town in my 5 spd FDI. Tanks easily avg 300 miles, which is reasonable--gas up once a week for 15k miles/year.

PS--go with Inferno Red (my choice-see my gallery pics)

If low maintenance and MPG are your primary considerations, and 4WD is not something you want/need, then the 2WD makes good sense.

Getting a manual tranny will help a bit with the MPG. I drove the manual version and I thought it was pretty good regarding the feel of the stick and clutch. I have the CVT and am very happy with it. Either tranny is low maintenance. Get the 2.4L engine, not the 2.0.

The jury is still out regarding long-term reliability, but the chassis/drivetrain has been out for a year or two and apparently has a good record so far.

Also...DIY engine oil changes are easy with the Pat

I don't really need the 4WD since I live in the flatlands of florida.
One more question...cloth seats or the vinyl (I can't afford leather)?
Sounds like the red may be my choice, although I am low key and don't like to attract attention! Is this a mid-life crisis?

we went with the cloth seats - YES fabric, I don't think the vinyl seats come with the fold flat option - not positive on this, since we wanted the cloth ones, so didn't do a ton of research into the vinyl.

Oh yeah - the fold flat front seat is useful! I have made good use of it already. You might have to get the "E" pkg to get it (which should also include the fabric seats).

The fact you live in FL is important. Leather seats can get freakin hot - as can vinyl. Get the YES fabric.

Do you think you will ever tow something? The Tow Prep pkg (whch I think still does not include the actual hitch) includes extra engine/tranny cooling capability which is good even if youre not towing anything.
Note: In my case, the factory put the tow wiring harness in a plastic bag in the cargo area and expected the dealer to install it. If you get it make sure its installed when you take delivery so you dont have to bring it back for that install.

Mid life crisis? I have personal experience with that! A lot of people going though that would want the red. In my case, I got the Steel Blue. That is a low-key color for sure.

I do plan on getting the towing package, and I thought it might not include the hitch, since it said something like towing "prep" package. But necessary anyway, better to get it done at the beginning. You are also right about the vinyl or leather seats, but thought they may be good since everyone loves to eat and spill things in my car. And I have dogs.

Always happy to throw in my 2 cents worth...
I don't have dogs, and I really havent tested the stain resistance of the YES fabric. Probably worth a search on this forum for that. FWIW my son reported that he spilled water on it - most of it just kinda rolled off the fabric and the remainder was easy to blot up.

If you Google "YES Essentials" on the web you'll probably get some good info.

I have a black Pat and although I love the look more than I thought I would. It's a be-atch to keep clean.

The sunroof is an $800 option on the Limited. So if it is a must, I bet an aftermarket power sunroof would be about the same $$. You could have it put on a sport.
