Before you slam me, I did a search for "illuminated approach" and got nothing.

My '09 CVT Sport E 4WD model doesn't have the EVIC feature. The OM says that the headlights that come on when unlocking can be turned off with that feature but says nothing about how to disable the feature on the E model.

I went to the stealership today to pick up the plates and asked the service dept if they could help. The young man went in the back to "talk to a tech". He came out and said there was a box installed that is not user accessable but he wanted to walk out to "check something". We walked to the Patriot. I unlocked it with the key fob, the headlights came on and he said there was nothing he could do. He never checked anything but asked if that was OK. I said, "no" but then I didn't expect much knowing how Dick Hannah's shops have treated us.

Anyone got a solution? Sorry if I sound bitter. I really feel this stealership did NOTHING to save a customer thru the whole thing. Hindsight 20/20 :(

The good part is I got the exact model I wanted. I'm getting 24mpg in town and 27mpg on the hiway.

I had my Dodge dealer flash my CVT (07) and I also asked them to turn off the horn sounding when I locked the door and to stop the headlamps from coming on when I unlocked the doors with the remote key. They said no problem. That was the only trip I have had to the dealer.

Sorry, but according to the Owners Manual (page 22), Illuminated Entry can only be adjusted for timing or turned off if you have the EVIC option on your Patriot. You can turn off the "flash lights on unlock or unlock" feature (explained on page 23-24), however this has no effect on the Illuminated Entry. There MAY be a way for a dealer to shut off the Illuminated Entry through the body computer via programming, but your service department would have to figure out how to do it - if at all. And it sounds like they are not willing to consider or try to determine if it can be done. You might want to check with another dealer.

Are you talking about the headlights flashing when you lock or unlock and then they stay on for a set period of time? If so, try this with your key fob:

NOTE: The “Flash Lights With Lock” feature can be
turned on or off. On EVIC equipped vehicles refer to
Personal Settings under “Electronic Vehicle Information
Center (EVIC)” in Section 4.
For vehicles not equipped with an EVIC, perform the
following steps:
1. Press the UNLOCK button for four to 10 seconds.
2. While the UNLOCK button is pressed (after four
seconds), press the LOCK button. Release both buttons.
3. Test the “flash lights” with LOCK feature, while
outside of the vehicle, by pressing the LOCK button on
the RKE transmitter with the ignition in the LOCK
position and the key removed.

Camas - we don't slam you if you tell us that you tried to find it, just don't get caught starting another mpg thread:doh:

Wow that Hannah guy have a monopoly on the Portland/Vancouver metro area or do you have choices for service? (google suggests he does)

try Oktazcat's solution

On the prompt of unlock form the fob the headlights stay on for 90 seconds (seems short but it really is quite a while). That's what I'm trying to stop.

As for the stealership. they don't even pretend to help. There are two more within 30 miles I can try. I figured you all would have more info than those putz'. Again, this Patriot has NO EVIC so the pages in the OM don't pertain.

I was able to shut the horn from blowing everytime I locked it. No luck getting the headlinghts from coming on.

Sorry for the mpg comment. But damn that's a great feature!

this post in its entirety borrowed from the Dodge Nitro Forum and a user named Nitro Tech. I think most of it will apply.

OPERATION
The Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) uses both non-switched and ignition switched sources of battery current so that some of its features remain operational at any time, while others may only operate with the ignition switch in the “ON” position. When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position, the EVIC display will return to the last function being displayed before the ignition was turned to the “OFF” position.

The EVIC system is comprised of several different components that communicate over the Controller Area Network (CAN) and Local Interface Network (LIN) Data Buses. If the system is inoperative a scan tool and the appropriate diagnostic information must be used to diagnose the system.

The EVIC function buttons are used to operate the different functions of the EVIC system. Pressing and releasing the MENU button (1) allows the driver to select the Compass/Temperature, Trip Computer, Personal Settings or System Status functions. The STEP button (4) is used to toggle through options or features of the Trip Computer, Personal Settings or System Status functions. Pressing and releasing the RESET button (3) allows the selection of setting or resetting of the function currently displayed at that time. Pressing and releasing the C/T (compass/temperature) button (2) will cause the EVIC to return to the compass/temperature display mode from any other mode.

EVIC DISPLAY MODES

SYSTEM STATUS MODE

System display mode displays warnings and user interaction messages on the EVIC display. The driver can scroll to view multiple messages by using the STEP button. System warnings will always over ride the current display as they become active.

-Door (S) Ajar (with a single chime if vehicle is in motion)
-Liftgate Ajar (with a single chime)

-Left Rear Low Pressure (with a single chime)
-Right Front Low Pressure (with a single chime)
-Right Rear Low Pressure (with a single chime)
-Check TPM System (with a single chime)
-Check Gascap

PERSONAL SETTINGS MODE (CUSTOMER PROGRAMMABLE FEATURES)

Allows the driver to set and recall features when the transmission is in Park by pressing and releasing the MENU button until Personal Settings is displayed in the EVIC. Pressing and releasing the STEP button will scroll through the following personal settings choices:

-Language When in this display you may select one of five languages for all display nomenclature, including the trip functions and the navigation system (if equipped). Press the RESET button while in this display to select English, Espanol, or Francais. Then, as you continue, the information will display in the selected language.
NOTE: The EVIC will not change the UConnect™ language selection.

-Average Fuel Economy Shows the average fuel economy since the last reset. When the fuel economy is reset, the display will read “RESET” or show dashes for two seconds. Then, the history information will be erased, and the averaging will continue from the last fuel average reading before the reset.

-Distance To Empty (DTE) Shows the estimated distance that can be traveled with the fuel remaining in the tank. This estimated distance is determined by a weighted average of the instantaneous and average fuel economy, according to the current fuel tank level. DTE cannot be reset through the RESET button. When the DTE value is less than 30 miles (48 km) estimated driving distance, the DTE display will change to a text display of "LOW FUEL." This display will continue until the vehicle runs out of fuel. Adding a significant amount of fuel to the vehicle will turn off the "LOW FUEL" text and a new DTE value will display.

-Elapsed Time Shows the total elapsed time of travel since the last reset when the ignition switch is in the ACC position. Elapsed time will increment when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position.

-Display Units of Measure in: To make your selection, press and release the RESET button until “US” or “METRIC” appears.

Cama - love the mileage point. My point to you was that to your credit, you did not start an entirely new thread to say so. All is good:smiley_thumbs_up:

Try what I posted from the owners manual with your key fob. I seem to remember someone else posted that they tried it from outside the vehicle and it didn't work so they tried sitting in the vehicle with the door closed and it did work. Just be sure that you are completely pressing the unlock button on the fob for a slow count of 4 and then while holding down the unlock button also press the lock button and then release both. Let us know if it worked. The service tech at Hannah is a twit IMHO but then he's probably related in some way to the twits that work on my Patriot.

So which is it? Can't be done, or use the "formulas" outlined by several posters?

Did someone say it affects the mileage if the lights flash? ;)

I think APT is right. Nothing seems to work. I've tried every possible combination to no avail.
The only thing left is to take it to a tech willing to hook it up to their computer and see if they can do it.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll let you know if I ever find a solution.

Really? I timed the headlights on after hitting the unlock on the key fob. 90seconds. I must have gotten the one-off version. Just my luck.

Sorry we couldn't get those lights off for ya. It's just about one of the first things I did after I got my Riot. During the winter months I turn it back on since I arrive at work before sunrise and park right in front of the entrance. Helps me see where to put the key in the door. Try to take it to a different service department. Good luck.

It's dumb that I can't shut off the 90 seconds of unwanted headlights shining into my neighbor's apartment when I unlock my Patriot doors late at night! Normally I would have the courtesy to only turn on my parking lights until I have pulled away, but this "Illuminated Entry" feature makes me out to be a real jerk. (I know I can use my key instead of RKE but it's dark out there and fumbling around with a key is no fun.) Can the dealer fix this and do they typically want to charge for this kind of thing?

illuminated approach work-around.

If you unlock the drivers' door manually with the key, not the fob, and then use the button on the inside of the door to unlock everything else, the headlights won't come on.
Not an ideal solution, but will enable me to take it to astronomy club events
