Awesome! thanks guys! That makes sense. I've noticed that flap on there, but thought it just opened up bigger when it sensed more vacuum on the system and not temp, since the vacuum line for it goes into the air box.

In AZ, I have no need to help get the engine warmer faster. If anything, I need exactly the opposite. They just test the actual emissions on a vehicle, and not all the junk that is cali emissions.

California is an amazingly beautiful state, I've been up and down it a dozen times in my life. and part of me has a great desire to live there... BUT...

the vast majority of the people in california suck, and the california government sucks. and I hate that a large number of them migrate to phoenix and bring their crap attitudes and expectations here.

Oh, I had no duct like that, where on the air filter box would it go? why would it suck hot air off the exhaust? usually you want as cold of air as you can get so its denser and keep the intake temps down.
Supposedly it helps with cold weather emissions. In carb and TBI applications it prevents throttle freezing.

Well last night got the new exhaust manifold on and when to put on my intake, it hits the exhaust... pushes it up about 1/4 of an inch, so it won't go into place. Do I take a torch and hammer to the exhaust to get it right, or do I go through the hassle of returning it, to maybe get another one that isn't quite right?

And the gun laws suck in California.

My goal was to have it running by the weekend after my birthday next month, but I don't think that is going to happen. I have a number of things I still have to do, I hope that with it being cooler today and tomorrow, I can get some work done after work today/tomorrow.

Got my engine 95% back together! Things I still need to do:

find/replace one of the bolts for the power steering pump.
Put the belt back on (waiting on bolt as it will be impossible to replace it once the belt is on)
Figure out where one large nut goes that I have left over.
Replace the throttle cable that I must have closed the hood on and snapped one of the times I was working.

I'll need to replace the engine mounts, but that is not critical for my current progress to see if this fixes all of the engine surging/racing/stalling issues I've had.

any opinion on these motor mounts?

I was looking at these the other day, to go with a new transmission mount. Reviews aren't good, heavy vibrations and what the ad doesn't tell you is they require grinding the drivers side engine mount to get it to fit.

In the end I just ended up buying rubber mounts again, figured the originals lasted 170K.
