I don't have my Jeep at work today to check my manual, but the dealership has been calling about scheduling a service interval. With my Versa I am used to them just doing a basic once over, and then occasionally a larger overhaul.

The dealer I bought the car from had completed the last interval so I am certain those were done. Today the dealership is trying to tell me that I have to have both front and rear brakes serviced, a fuel injection clean, and to have my transmission fluid flushed.

Nothing about anything getting anything else checked, but $900 in these "optional" service items. ($218 * 2, $200, and $300 respectively). Google also does not seem to be able to find the "official" warranty service schedule, and the dealership said all of these are optional and not required for warranty.

Granted, I am fine with getting the brakes serviced, but not for freaking $400! That is what I would pay to get everything changed from front to back on the Versa, and a service is about $90! And a fluid flush? I cannot say I ever had to get that done on any vehicle I owned until I was close to or above 100,000kms!

Any thoughts or links?

youwill get those service notices from your dealer for the rest of your life
9 years and 200k miles i still get them,
i always ignored them and just followed the service recommendation in the manual
those dealer notices are just computer generated blasts
also service does not have to be done at dealer to maintain warranty,
can do it yourself, or have regular shop do it
i have lifetime warranty on my jeep, i never took my jeep to the dealer for service
and few times i had warranty work done even as recently as at 190k miles they never questioned any maintenance records.

only warning my dealer gave me about warranty is he recommended i go back to stock tire sizes and said corporate requires they send tire size and pics for warranty work, that is a new FCA requirement and have been denying claims due to oversize tires

service recommendation in the manual
Interesting, I found the downloaded version I had, and checked on this. Nothing about brakes until 64,000, nothing about transmission until close to 200k for the 6-speed (and only for specific questions), and nothing about cleaning the fuel injection system. That said it seems like the "actual" suggested maintenance schedule is not 54,000km, and that suggests changing the engine air filter and spark plugs.

Definitely making me question this dealership, and what list they are working on!

And to clarify, by "brake service" not being there, I didn't mean just the inspection, but the one where they take everything apart, check / lube the caliper pistons, etc. I can get that done at any mechanic around here included in the summer / winter prep packages for about $80. Certainly not $218 per pair!

all dealers have a similar ridiculous service schedule that has nothing to do with car manufacturers recommended intervals
and their service schedule charges are always in the hundreds even +$1000 at major intervals
its not just jeep or that specific dealer, they all do it

Does it need new pads, rotors, shoes, drums? How many miles on it? Most dealers will tell you it needs brake service when the parts could last another 10-20,000 miles. FI cleaning is just BS. If it's running fine forget about it. Trans flush could create more problems than it solves. Better to just drain and fill the fluid every 2nd or 3rd oil change.

"stealership"

There are a few good ones around me, but not many, most are complete bull**** when it comes to service on vehicles.

I was talking to a guy I know who owns a dealer, and way more than half of the money he makes comes from service/service agreements, and not from actually selling cars. he actually breaks even (before manufacture kick backs) most months on new cars, if you consider the cost of selling the car (salaries, rent, lights, etc). They make money on the service, upselling at closing (warranties, gap, window tinting etc), and selling the loans to banks. the actual car selling part is not very profitable for them compared to the other parts of the business. Not saying they don't make money, but that the other things they do has a much higher profit margin for them.

Yeah, the first two I agree with you on which is why I balked, but I do not agree with this. The transmission fluid on the maintenance schedule is at 192,000km. Why would you be changing it every 15,000km? We have 154,000km on our Versa, and it has never had a transmission fluid replacement!

It's because it looks good in the showroom, selling people on a nearly maintenance-free vehicle, and of course if the transmission dies then, it's far out of warranty anyway. And a drain isn't the same as a change. And I'm not familiar with your specific transmission but in many cases, two thirds of the old fluid is still inside the transmission after you drain the pan. So if the transmission contains 9 quarts, you might be able to drain out 3 through the drain plug. It would take 3 of these drainings to completely change out the fluid, but of course since you are mixing new fluid with old, it's it's not a total change. Still, it's pretty simple and cheap to remove a drain plug and add fluid.
