Hi folks. I've conducted enough google searches that've landed me somewhere in this forum that I thought I'd join and see what else you've got going on here.

My girlfriend and I are on our second Patriot.

Without knowing much about them myself, I was unaware of some of the options available. I thought the speakers in the tailgate sounded like a cool feature, so I decided to try and one up Jeep when we bought one without that option.

For about $100, this is what I came up with. I did one side last night, just to make sure it was going to work.

I added speaker terminals in the trunk space so that I could use external speakers, and only be limited by the amount of wire I hooked them up with.

I went with the Pyle speakers you can see in the picture because they're weatherproof, and we have them outside at a camp my friend and I have and they're great sounding.

I also added a kill switch for the rear door speaker because talking with crutchfield, they were worried about overloading the factory stereo.

I'm happy with how things turned out. I think if I go any further with it, I'd make something for the trailer hitch that I could hang the speakers on, but that's probably not a very important step to take.

Anyway, thanks for having me in the forums, and hello again.

Welcome from SoFlo. I could probably hear you all the way here with that set up! If Blue Tooth speakers similar to those were available that would be the ultimate. You could eliminate having to route the wires / trip hazards.
Turn it up!

Welcome to forum.

I love this and how it looks like it's supposed to be there. Would you be able to provide a bit more info on how you wired this up?
I have to do the other side tonight, so I'll be sure and take more pictures of the process. But it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Between the doors, under the seat belt there's a wire harness that has your wiring for the rear door features. I unhooked it and used my speaker and a piece of wire to figure out which part of the harness was sending sound to the door speaker, I cut those wires.

I spliced speaker wire onto the cut end and ran it under the door sill, behind the trunk molding and out of the hole where the terminal is in the picture above. I hooked that wire to the terminal, and another from the terminal to the kill switch you can also see in the picture above. Finally I ran another wire from the kill switch, behind the molding, under the door sill and back to the other side of the wire harness.

This way, the terminals I added are always powered, but without something plugged into them, they're just dormant. The door speakers work off of the kill switch, so I can turn them off when I do have something plugged into the terminals.

Probably confusing to read, but I'll post again tonight or tomorrow (probably tomorrow) with a couple pictures of the process and clear up any confusion.

Thanks for the compliments though. I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes the idea.

Something like that for sure. In fact, I was in Radio Shack last night looking for different switches so that I could just turn a knob and have one powered while the other was off, which is exactly what you're talking about, I believe. I couldn't find anything though, and I didn't want to wait out another Amazon order, so I'm working with what I have.

Brings back memories of when I had "Snake Balls" of wires coming from behind my stereo equipment!
