Hey guys,

I was just curious. As I had mentioned in a few posts, my wife and I just bought a 2008 Patriot as her daily driver. It's loaded, w/ only 14k miles. We bought it for $13,600. It's in immaculate condition, and the only reason I can think that we got it for cheap is because it's a manual transmission. I figure that most of the people looking for this car are not looking for a manual.

Which got me wondering, how many stick shift Patriots are there? I can't say that I've seen a single other one on eBay (at least at the time I was looking).

And the last question about this is, what kind of fuel economy should I expect from this vehicle? The AVG fuel economy notification tells us that we average around 22.5-23 miles to the gallon. However, that economy seems to remain the same regardless of whether we're on the highway or not. When it's only city driving, it averages about 22.5. When we're on hte highway, it gets (at best) 24 miles to the gallon. Is that normal? I had heard somewhere that I should expect in the range of 27-28 on the highway.

Just curious....

Thanks!!!

i have the 07 4x4 5 speed and i get about 23 in town. my bro just took if on a 3000 mile road trip to mt, wy, sd, nb,and kansas we added up the miles and it avg about 27 mpg it was loaded down good. hope you like it good luck.

In the UK the majority of Pats are manual and a 2.0 diesel turbo. As is mine. Mine has a 6 speed gear box and I'm getting 35 mph at the moment but that should climb up to around the 40 mph mark when she's run in a bit more. The brochure says over 50 mph on a run. She's only done about 900 miles so far and she's 14 months old.

You can buy a 2.4 gas version, a Ltd S but what with the rising cost of fuel over here. Currently ÂŁ1.06 per litre, yes per litre. I think I'll get a bicycle.

P.S. Do not follow your overhead if you have it, hand-calc only. My Dodge Diesel was 2.5mpg low from the factory, now after upgrades it's about 8mpg too high.

I had a hard time finding one to test drive. They are not real popular. I can't figure out why, the 5 speed is clearly better in this vehicle than the automatic.

I get 28 to 32 highway MPG.

4x4, 5 speed. Very consistent 32-33 mpg per tank using some hypermiling techniques. I live in rolling country, driving is 99% highway. TP is 44-45 psi. As a former bicyclist I learned quickly about rolling resistance. I used the same pressures in my last car. Traded it on the Patriot @ 50K and the tires still passed inspection with no problem.

4x4 5 Speed owner here.....Ok, apparently I got the last 2008 5 speed 4x4 in all Quebec and Ontario (2 Provinces) when I bought it in june 2008. So either they didn't make enough or it's very popular here. It might have helped that the government was giving 1000$ back if you would either buy the 2.0l or the 2.4l 5 speed.

I don't have my average because I don't have the computer and I'm too lazy to do it. All I know is I can't complain. :D

I have had my 2008 FDI (5 speed manual) for over 1 year. I have recorded the fuel economy on just about every fill, see results below. I have found the following items affect fuel economy from most to least:

  1. City (stop and go driving as opposed to Hwy driving)
  2. Weather below freezing
  3. Shifting at higher than 2100 RPM (or lower than 1800 RPM)
  4. Speed over 115 km/hr
  5. Air Conditioning
  6. Fast acceleration

On average the fuel economy meets published figures:
10.69 L/100km City (22 mpg City)
8.71 L/100km Hwy (27 mpg Hwy)

Overall average based on my personal combination of City/Hwy driving was 10.17 L/100km (23.37 mpg).

Damn! I want a 6-Speed!!! hah...

You're talking about Imperial Gallons though, right? Every time I tell one of my friends across the pond what kind of fuel economy I get, they think I'm the sole polluter of the world.

One imperial gallon is approximately equal to 1.201 U.S. gallons.

So you're putting out about 29 miles to the gallon by American standards.

So that means that right now I'm averaging about 28 miles to the gallon (Imperial).

Ok, I guess that makes sense then. The one thing too was, when I first bought the car, I didn't think to check it but the air intake tube was loose on the throttle body. It appeared as though the dealership changed the filter and forgot to screw it back on properly. I'm sure that would have an effect as air was bypassing the MAF.

I wonder if your 6-Speed could mate to my 2.4? hehhe....

Yep! I do the SAME THING for my Crown Victoria. I've managed (believe it or not) 28.2 miles to the gallon from my 2002 Ford Crown Victoria LX on a highway trip. In-city is NOT good (16-17 average), but I have 2.73:1 gears, so it gets excellent highway mileage. I got that 28.2 miles to the gallon on a trip to Georgia from Fort Lauderdale with the cruise set at 75mph.

My gauge must be significantly off, I'm just not sure because I really think it should be getting higher than that. I've got synthetic in there. I'll probably put a K&N air filter in there when the time comes for me to replace this one. I can't really think of anything else that I could change that would improve it. It's possible too that it might be the tires also. They have some wear on them (especially the driving wheels) and have maybe 1/4 of their life left. So I'm guessing that newer tires (with less resistance) would probably yield better times.

Thanks guys! Also, anyone know how I can reset the AVG MPG counter? Is the only way to do it, by resetting the ECM?

Thanks!

07' sport 4x4 5 speed here. I have 25,000 miles on it now and average 27mpg almost every time I fill up since I bought it new. A few times it has been lower, the weeks that I am running late and really dog it (close to redline) on the way to work, or go to the mountains and go on back roads or trails that are real steep and I have to keep the rpms up. Those times it has been 23mpg. I have been very pleased with it's fuel econ.

the trick to highway driving is keeping your speed close to the limit and being in 5th...even still its about 2.5K at 100KM/h but i've gotten 40MPG out of my caliber on a highway trip last summer. i just got back from doing 900km over the weekend, and averaged 37MPG doind 110-120 on the way back with the A/C on...not bad at all! I assume the Pat would be able to get the same results, or very similar. the trick is shifting around 2K for optimum MPG

With each new tank of 87 octane, my 2009 Patriot 5speed has been averaging 29.7 for daily commuting.
This has been since delivery, with less than 1500 miles on the clock so far.
Gasoline consumpion is low for such a versatile vehicle with very good acceleration from such a small engine.:Racing:

I've only put 3 tanks of gas in my new patriot, but the gas mileage is pretty good for a 4x4 vehicle..

When I did my oil change I switched to Mobil 1 0W-30 and removed the factory airbox and installed a cone type air filter.

Things I see ruin my mileage.
1. Stop and go city driving
2. fast acceleration, shifting above 2000 rpm
3. E-10 gas! If I ever find pure gasoline I get a solid 32 MPG.
4. Head or side/head wind over 10 MPH
5. A/C use, but very negligible maybe 1 mpg at the most.

By far, any kind of strong wind, 10+ MPH, from anywhere front or side is what kills my mileage. So much so that when Gas is expensive, or my schedule permits, I will avoid driving on windy days.
