Peter,
The K&N filters allow more air flow, but still filter as well as the stock one.

For most, there is no noticeable increase in HP or mileage. But it is nice to be able to just clean it off and reuse instead of buying a new one every 15k miles or so.

More air, less restriction, less filtering. Bottom line, K & N filters would be hard on the engine. More air, more dirt etc, less filtration. Patriots are not high performance vehicles, But this filter will help the car wear out sooner that later. A poor modification if you want to run the engine a 100K miles.
Proof to back that up? K&N research says otherwise.

I've personally only put about 80k miles on one oil and gauze air filter, but I've got something like 250k miles total using them on various vehicles as well as on my ATVs that see more dust than any of my vehicles.

I used a K&N drop in on a Nissan 200SX SE-R for the majority of the 190,000km on the odometer before I traded it in. No engine problems, engine was still a tank. I don't recall if mileage was any better, but it definately didn't get worse. It did however have quicker acceleration, especially when it was driven hard :Racing:

I'll use one on my Patriot with no worries. :smiley_thumbs_up:

Here's the install:
