Hey everyone. Great site you have going on here.

The wife and I are looking into buying our first new car, and we really really want to make it a Patriot.

We want the cheaper 4x2, automatic... nothing fancy, no bells and whistles.

We both currently drive vintage aircooled Volkswagens, so anything new is a step up in comfort. :)

At first, I was thinking I wanted to go used, just to save money... (we are both graduate students, so saving money is a HUGE deal). But then I started looking into it, and maybe its not a bad idea to buy a new Patriot?

Example of a used Patriot i was looking at: 2007 Patriot, 2.0, FWD, CVT, 26k miles - $11,350

Since most of you have bought new from a dealership, what do you think could I expect to pay for a new Patriot?

Also, we are looking to buy in September-October. We have paid off all my credit cards and will be done with the wife's credit cards in Sept. My credit score is now 'excellent' that my cards are gone. :)

When do the new models come out? If it is around that time, it would be in my best interest to find a 'left-over' 2009, right?

I am trying to do a ton of research so i don't get screwed. (We did a ton of research before buying our house, and finally got a great deal and took the plunge last year - hoping to do the same with the Patriot.)

I just want a new, dependable car that i can take to visit my parents 600 miles away, or to the beach, to get groceries, AND still get good gas mileage.

For what its worth, our little 1968 VW Beetle has taken us all over Texas several times, but its time to get a grown up car and keep the VWs for the weekend... ;) Plus, we could use the extra luggage space. Road trips in a bug are a wee bit cramped.

I am going to continue reading this forum (probably read almost every thread so far. haha) and get prepared for the big purchase - big for us anyway.

Thanks! :smiley_thumbs_up:

Hello & welcome!! We dont get the 4x2 over here in UK, but a lot of the USA guys own them--Seems like a great little daily driver to me. Oh yea Pats have loads of interior space & are Nice to drive. I used to own a 2 litre Gas CVT Caliber ( same Platform & trans as 2x4 Pat) I never had any concerns with that engine/trans combo-great drive.

thanks tiptronic. seems like a perfect daily driver for us. fuel efficiency of a car, with the practicality of an SUV.

Any tips or suggestions to get a rock bottom price on a Pat? (there aren't any incentives as of now... hopefully there will be a few come sept-oct)

With the plant shut down as of May 1st & still no news of when it will re-open. I am guessing the 09s are done. If the plant re-opens, they will be switching over to 2010s. (As there are still planty of 09s out there) If you are set on the Patriot, by Sep-Oct, you should be able to get a deal on whatever is left. With the 2010s, that could be another ball game? If they sell out the 09s b/f end of the year, you will not see them discount the 2010s, until mid-to late 2010. Looking at past trends, the Patriot is the least discounted vehicle in their line-up.

I have a 4x2 with the 26E package and the wheel package. I bought it new so I can't say for sure if u r getting a good deal or not but it sounds like it to me. For a daily driver in mainly city/traffic driving I can say that I am not disappointed in the Patriot. Now, you say that you are looking to save and considering a new vehicle as well. Take this into consideration... If you buy new you get the lifetime drive train warranty on your side. By buying used, you don't since it's not transferable. Look around. There are some really good options out there.

In your area (I hope they are still open) Maxwell Taylor seems to have some in stock with some decent prices. http://www.maxwelltrucks.com/Inventory_new.html

South Point Dodge (open?) seems to have some inventory as well. http://www.southpointdodge.com/sitemap/index.cfm/new_inventory/2009-JEEP-Patriot|Sport/4820037

OK, so some stuff has happened, and I am going to buy soon... like within days... :)

I am looking at one online at a dealer right up the street...
2009 Patriot Sport 2.4L 4x2 -
MSRP $17,920

How low should I throw an offer?

There is a dealer in a neighboring city, with the same car listed like this...
List Price: $18,470
Internet Price: $14,877

I am going to print out the latter one and see if the dealer close to me will be willing to negotiate off that competitive 'internet price'...

They don't have any new 08's anymore, unfortunately, but I hope i can get a very good deal on one of their 09 Sports...

What kind of offer should I try to get them to agree to? What is realistic?

thanks!

I hope you can get a good deal, however, with no new Pats being produced as of yet and Chrysler's stance that their vehicles are under valued you may not be able to get 4k off without insentives.

Saying that if you are not happy with what they offer walk away. If they want the sale they may be willing to negociate more. Also wait until closer to the end of the month as they may be more willing to give you a better price to make their sales numbers for the month.

Good Luck!

P.S. I have the 4x2 with package 26E and I love it. It has saved me a ton of money on fuel over my last vehicle. :D

aaaaaand we bought one.

a bare bones 2009 4x2. only upgrade was the automatic transmission.

the first dealership was trying to rip me off bad. selling me a base model for like 18k and not budging. i was pissed and went to Maxwell in Taylor tx..

ended up with a Silver Patriot Sport with CVT for 14,900

i think it was a good deal. not a stellar one, but the establishment was way better than the first one i went to. i was hoping for like a 14k patriot... but its ok... the wife loooooves it

as do i...

i actually dont mind the manual windows and door locks, but i am looking to add cruise control (speed control, whatever they call it) before i visit my parents in the winter... other than that, its perfect. and cheap to boot! couldn't justify getting something anything else really. great bargain of a vehicle.

Do a search in the threads. There have been some members who acquired the cruise control that MOPAR uses (as aftermarket but same manufacturer) and had it installed much cheaper than dealer - if I am not mistaken.

I have the "stripper" 4x4. I had the dealer add Cruise, fog lights, roof rack and trailer hitch. They had a $500 local auto show discount, which almost covered the extra items and their installation.

You will really like this vehicle. I drove to New Mexico and back to Minnesota in about a week. Lots of time in the car, but it was pleasant travel. I make a 400 mile commute on a bi-weekly basis. I've had the Patriot since March of 08 and I have 31,000 totally trouble free miles.

Nice to know there are some deals out there. I visited a dealer that is now only selling used cars on the 5th and they were "graciously going to take $2000 off".
yeah there are still some cheap Pats out there... it may be worthwhile to call around and see what incentives are offered. i mostly just used and internet print out of dallas dodge's 12999 patriot offer (base model, 5 spd, no options) and worked from there.
