I just received my new 2008 Patriot and I've noticed a sound coming from the steering wheel whenever I turn it. It's gotten louder over the last few days. It sounds like something rubbing against something else. I haven't had a chance to get under the steering column to see if I can see the source.

Has anyone else had this? Were you able to fix it?

I already have to go back to get a wheel alignment and to get the trailer hitch they forgot to install so I'll mention it then if nobody has any ideas.

Thanks,

Shane

There are a couple of bits that connect between the steering column and the wheel itself:

The colum
The Clock Spring
Some Airbag / Electrical wiring

Anyone of those could be rubbing and causing the noise

I bought a 2007 Patriot limited about a month ago and I noticed the same noise. They replaced the clock spring but it still makes a noise. It's getting kind of annoying. The click noise isn't as loud as it was before but it's getting more frequent again. Anyone else have this problem?

I would have someone turn the wheel back and forth, while looking under the hood. See if the sound is coming from the power steering pump..

I'm not sure if the Patriot has a Steering box or Rack & Pinion, but it sounds like something is not right in there. I don't remember ever having this noise on my 2007.

The sound is def. coming from the wheel. The dealership was supposed to contact Chrysler about it but I haven't gotten a call to bring my Jeep back so I guess all is good. But Chrysler may have not gotten back to them yet too so I don't know. It started about a week after I got it. It's really annoying.

had this noise on my 07 compass. the dealer replaced the clockspring. the noise went away and just recenly returned but much softer than before. ive come to just live with it since the dealer closed last year. nothing else is affected right now so im not worried.

They are going to be replacing the clock spring again and possible the signal light components that are behind the wheel. Has anyone else had this issue? They replaced the spring once and the click wasn't bad at first but it had gotten worse and back where I started.

I was told that the spring can trigger the air bag. Is that true?
it's called a 'CLOCKSPRING'...it's NOT an actual 'spring' but the electrical contact that connects the horn, cruise control, radio controls and yes, air bag connections with the wiring harness in the column.

yes, if you do not properly follow R&R procedures when removing the steering wheel, you CAN set off the air bag. all the clockspring does to the air bag is to send the signal from the air bag sensors to the air bag telling it to deploy in the event of an accident.

the only 'spring' in the steering wheel is for horn operation and it's rather doubtful that it is the cause of your noise. probably either something rubbing (steering wheel against the column cover or possibly the wiring harness inside the wheel) or the clockspring.

Perhaps..."the clock-spring" hasn't been wound tight enough....Maybe, and just maybe, we can find someone that will lubricate this spring with Nitrogen as plain old air has too much water vapor in it....

Sorry...I just couldn't resist!

I too have that problem now. Ive had the Pat for about 11 mos and noticed the noise about 3 mos ago. Sounds like soft clicking when turning the wheel more than 1/4 turn.

Yes, it is annoying.

I am also having this problem, clicking when I turn the wheel.. VERY annoying and hard to swallow for a car about 1 year old  I took it in and they checked out the suspension and related areas and said it was fine. They said the noise I am hearing is the turn signal reset plastic things that are making contact with another plastic object. The service guy basically said that he can't fix it, that the Pat uses a thiner plastic insulation panel than most cars to reduce cost and weight, and that it doesn't insulate against sound as well. I am going to take it to another dealership. This is annoying and unacceptable, a brand new vehicle should not make this noise. :(

oh, don't apologize. i, for one, come to this forum for 'entertainment purposes only'!!! :D

Ok I know this is an old thread. But I'm still having issues with the clock spring running up against the back of the steering wheel. Anyone have any solutions to fix this? My dealership says I'm the only one so far with the issue. The last time they attempted to fix it they changed the light and signal light control stick and the wires with it and put a new spring in and put some sticky tape down. It only made a very faint click but now it's to the point where it's loud and annoying again.

I just took mine in for this same issue on Monday..replaced the clock spring as well.
Im getting a gut feeling its coming back slowly but surely.
This is for the clicking noise...I dont and never have heard any rubbing or grinding.
Well..its back..just as bad as before.
Not bad..temporary solution for 3 weeks.

Well, this thing is driving me bananas..I had a passenger actually ask me whats that noise?
I went to a local dealer I have used for warranty servicing (as they are a little more reactive and supportive than the dealer I bought this vehicle from on Saturday, ya get less lip service) this morning on the way to work...and would you belive it.....?

The dealership is closed!!!all the cars have been removed from the lot, windows are all covered up...man o man...I thought they were only closing dealerships in the U.S.

Longmans..East of McCowen north side of Hiway 7. Ya think they may have mailed out a notice along with all the other monthly crap they mail out.
