According to the jeep website the patriot has 8.1 inches of ground clearance for all trims. I have a hard time believing this since the fd2 comes with bigger tires than the fd1. FD1 comes with 215/60/17 while fd2 comes with 215/65/17... Would this mean that fd2 actually has .5 inches higher ground clearance?

Here is a 2008 chart
http://www.autoblog.com/buy/2008-Jeep-Patriot/specs/

In 2011 model, they used the fd2 suspension in fd1 making 8.5 inches of ground clearance
fd2 also has .5 inches more of ground clearance due to bigger ties. So 9 inches of ground clearance for fd2. The jeep site is wrong its 8.4-8.5 inches of ground clearance for the fd1

Heheh, another score for the Patriot. FD2 comes with P215/65R17 SR-A's no matter what, right? And as far as I know those same tires are still available on FD1(they came on mine), meaning a FD1 might or might not have same ground clearance as FD2, depending on tires. But not counting tire size measurements, FD1 and FD2 should be the same clearance. Don't recall if 2wd versions still have shorter suspension though.

Just curious, but anyone out there own a newer forester or outback? I am curious if their advertised ground clearance match what they posted online for subaru.

FDII always got 215/65/17 Wrangler SRA tires, that along with different springs on the 207-2010 models resulted in an increase of 1" of ground clearance over the FDII. 2011+ models all get the same springs which result in the same ground clearance, however the FDII will still be slightly higher than FDI since they have 215/65/17 tires, most FDI have 215/60/17

Where are we measuring "ground clearance?

From the bottom of the rails?

Or bottom of exhaust/muffler?

Or the lowest point of the car looking underneath? If so, what is that?

I'm guessing jeep measures from the lowest point, to make it easy I just took a 12" ruler and measured from the ground to the bottom of the plastic rocker. No that isn't the lowest point of the vehicle but it makes an easy comparison if others want to measure

Its the lowest point not including the control arms since these will move up and down depending on the terrain. Usually its the rear differential but in the patriot's case it probably is some of the frame going through the center of the jeep.

I guess I could be wrong but I assumed there is some industry standard for the ground clearance numbers advertised. Subaru lists the same number for Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek, which is about half an inch below the number Jeep has for the newer Patriots. They look about the same to me.

OT, I know, but I parked next to a Trail Rated Liberty yesterday and was surprised how far off the ground it was. All stock, but sheesh, that's annoying.
Take a look at the back, solid rear axle, the axle pumpkin hangs down quite low, that would be the lowest point, we don't have axles hanging down so that is a plus
