I picked up a 2016 Subaru Forester. Put on 600 miles this weekend and couldn't be happier. It gets better gas mileage, I averaged 33.7 MPG on the trip. The ride is so smooth and quiet and the interior doesn't have that Spartan feel. The AWD system is better than the stock Patriot system. Sure, if I lifted or picked up an FDII Patriot it would be a different story, but then your gas mileage goes out the window. Was able to get the same amount of luggage and gear inside. I'm also hopeful that this will be more reliable than the Patriot. The Subaru engine and trans are known to be very bullet proof and there really aren't any common problems with the Forester models.

The price on the Subaru was only about $1000 more than a similarly equipped Patriot Limited 4x4 with both coming in right around $27k.

Working on getting the Patriot all cleaned up and detailed and listed for sale locally this week.

Me, I went with a Mercedes Benz ML320 than again I was looking used. Bought one Pat new in fall and I could have bought another but every used one for the price I was looking to spend was selling for more money, had double the miles, more cosmetic issues, rust, and usually a 2008.

The most expensive jeep I can find around these parts is $24k... loaded with every option, if you drop a few options, most are under $20k for a lot of the options, I would have saved the 8-9k (as you save the taxe increase as well) and suabrus are notorious for oil consuption, leaking valve and head cover gaskets that are crazy expensive to fix (because of the boxer engine).

Subarus are not my first choice, but good luck with your vehicle!

I've heard the newer subaru's have been having a lot of problems with leaking valves and gaskets like around in circles described. I also highly doubt the 4wd system in the subaru's is any better than the patriot. They are probably almost exactly the same.

If I didn't get a patriot I would have gotten a subaru back in the day. Now, after offroading a bit and getting some more experience of off road, I am leaning towards a wrangler/cherokee/grand cherokee/xterra. Anything less than these seem to really struggle on some on the trails that I want to be able to do. I am also not a fan of the cvt transmission so the fd2 would be out of the question.

Really look at the xterra's my boss has one and drives it like its a baby, has never taken it off road, and it has been a repair nightmare... everything on it has broken, and with just over 20k miles it has an engine tick that doesn't sound healthy....

not saying they are all bad, I haven't done the research, but his has been not good.

Edit: of course my XJ hasn't been a cream puff either... but it was cheap at only $500...

X2

Only subaru I would get would be an older STI:Racing:

I would buy a Tacoma myself.. I may be trading the Patriot in for one in a few months.
Tacoma's are awesome. I had a stripped single cab manual 2009 4 cyl and it was my most favorite vehicle

I like Subaru's but how can you be sure the AWD system works better than the patriot's if you haven't had it offroad or in the snow, on dry pavement you aren't going to see a difference, FDII and FDI patriot's AWD system's are the same, obviously i'm partial to the MK's but I need some video proof your subi has a better AWD system=)

There are lots of videos on YouTube of Subarus with 3 tires on the roller ramps and one on the ground. The later models seem directly comparable to the FDI system. No low range though. The Subaru crosstrek forums have that as their biggest complaint.

The point I was making is that we can go by what's on the internet, but I want to know how the AWD system isn't as good as the Subaru's.........bold statement, I want to see it backed up :D

Technically not part of the AWD system, but the BLD is a major downside to me. Using the brakes to control traction isn't the way to go as it causes a loss of momentum and the implementation leaves something to be desired. Of course that is just my opinion and others may argue otherwise.

The Jeep is in FWD only mode normally and can send 20/30 to the rear wheels when needed. Otherwise you are limited to low speeds and a 50/50 split with FDI.

The Subaru system maintains a 60/40 split under normal driving conditions and uses clutches and is able to quickly send power to whichever wheels need it very quickly.

IMO, the Subaru feels more agile on the road and you can feel that all the wheels are getting power and attached to the road and solid. It is hard for me to explain. I drove both the FWD and AWD version of the Patriot and they both felt the same under normal driving, couldn't tell the difference between the two. Obviously I don't have the luxury of test driving them in the snow right now. But I've owned an '06 Impreza in the past and did drive that in the snow and felt that it did better in the winter than the Patriot did. Again, just my opinion. I'm not expecting anyone on a Jeep forum to agree with me :)

As far as the oil consumption, I knew about those issues going in. I'm cautiously optimistic that they have worked the issues out for the 2016 models. I did a lot of research and from what I could find the oil consumption issues only affected a relatively small amount of vehicles. Some claims of 5% up to 10%. The 2011 models appear to be the worst. The number of issues per unit with oil consumption appears to be going down with 2015 models being the lowest in 4 years. The 2015 is showing less than a quarter as many issues and less than 2%.

As far as cost...A Patriot Limited starts at around $28,695 MSRP with Auto and 4 wheel drive. Add another $1500 for Sunroof. You can absolutely get a Patriot for cheaper than a Forester. No question about it. The Forester starts at $26k for the base model. But if you option up a Patriot to a similar configuration as the Forester Limited they cost about the same. Other thing was that you can't get a 2016 Patriot. If I bought a Patriot now it would be a model that is a year old down the road resale won't be quite as good as if it was a 2016.

STI's are ugly :)
Yea never heard much bad about Subaru's as stated above.

That's exactly what the Subaru's Awd system does. In fact most systems do that, FORDs Advance-trac, land rover, Toyota ATRAC...

What year is the xterra?
