I tried to test drive a new wrangler when I was looking to buy jeeps, but I couldnt fit enough to even drive- I'm 6'9". Also couldnt drive the liberty.

Surprising to me atleast, I fit in the pat.

However, Jepstr has unknowingly convinced me to get a jeep for 4x4ing, and a wrangler sounds like a good starting point. Are there any of them historically that I might actually fit in?

Secondly, how is the commander offroad?

Well I am only 6'3" but I don't fit in a Liberty either... How they messed up and got so little headroom I'll never know.

I have had 3 CJ Jeeps as well as a TJ ('98) and both had more room than the current Wrangler in the drivers seat.

Try an older one...

Good to know- I'll check them out.

Anyone have an opinion on how the commander performs?

I do not know what they did to the new Wrangler for it to be so small inside because it looks like the largest ever on the out side. I drove a 2005 Wrangler and found the ones with full hard doors were cramped for space while the soft topped doors were not. The thicker hard doors left no room for my left arm. I haven't been in one of the new wranglers because they just look too big on the outside. I guess I will have to try one on for size.

if i had the money, i woulda got a commander.
But, i got commander's little brother!
I had to chuckle at that, because when I was looking for jeeps, the commander was cheaper than the patriot! I considered a commander, but decided against it because it has no resale value, and it seemed a little big and a gas hog.

DAYMN! A Commander sells for about 70k€ over here (as opposed to about 30k€ for the Patriot).

WTF!!! Cheaper than a Patriot, makes no sense......?

I guess if you live in the USA, then a diesel option probably wouldn't be available.

Lack of head room in the JK????

Easy fix take the top off and go Iraq style :)

Commander cheaper than the Patriot?? and you got the Patriot.

Good lord man what were you thinking?? With the cheap fuel prices you guys have in the US of A you all should be driving the suckers. If only I could afford the Commander it would be parked next to the KJ not the MK next to the KJ.

The dealership where I bought my Patriot has an Commander in Black registered September 07. It has done the same mileage as my Patriot...I am seriously thinking of getting it as I could afford the price. However the road tax and fuel cost in the UK is not in it's favour. But it would be a buy now keep for ever kind of purchase :)

It gets great reviews due to the Mercedes 3.0L diesel but the fuel economy is really bad.

I also had a look around the new Cherokee (Liberty in the US) and it is pretty nice too.
