I read the aussie review and was dissapointed.

I've read quite a few reviews prior to purchasing the patriot, and i tell ya what, MOST put emphasis on interior quality and power.

Mate, if they want quality and power, go get a BIG 4WD with a frigg'n aircraft jet engine in it. I wanted a small suv with ability, safety, and reasonable fuel consumption.

Thats it.
I dont need a massive 4WD and the running costs would be huge, and for what!!

The Patriot was priced very nicely, and i couldn't give a damn if the interior was inferior to the jap offerings, they couldn't do half the stuff the Pat could do. (need the lift kit and right tyres though:))
I love the on road mannerisms and i feel safe in it, someone posted a thread a while ago saying they were in a serious crash, and walked away basically unharmed.
IMO its a 4WD/AWD, not purely an AWD vehicle, and like STOCKYbuilt put it, 'the little jeep that could'

And last of all, hardly ANYONE has a Patriot where i live, I love being different:pepper:

I didn't even want a Patriot initially, but only since it was a good deal and that it was my time to finally get myself a "new" vehicle... I didn't really look into these reviews and road tests, other than Edmunds.com. That site prompted me to taken another look at the Pat because of the good reviews by real-life consumers and owners. I looked at anything from the Sportage to the Equinox, and 2nd-hand Rav4 to Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4x4. Now Im hooked onto the Pat and can't be happier despite the little bit of "imperfections" that it has. Overall it's been trouble-free other than my own paranoia over a few noises here and there, and it's been perfect for my lifestyle...

But the Comparisons are always fun to read regardless. Here is one I've found: http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/rankings/Affordable-Compact-SUVs/ , a list of Best Affordable Compact SUVs  (Hint: keep strolling down to find the Pat)

On a brighter note... http://www.totallymotor.co.uk/feature/car-style/4x4/jeep-collects-three-4x4-awards-$1238373.htm:pepper:

Still, I swear I've spotted a N American Road Test article with the Pat VS. a bunch other SUVs from a 2008 magazine somewhere...

Comparsion of American car - German car - German car
Tested by German magazine.

Winner 1. German car 2. German car 3. American car
Winner announced by German magazine...

Sry if I can't take it very seriously :D
Sure the german car magazin is somewhat (VW) one sided as usualy. so it was pretty clear for me about the outcome of the test before i got the magazin.
But Autobild didn´t bash the Patriot and that was a surprise for me. Hey you should know what they wrote about the Compass, lol.
The tester seems to like the Patriot but how the test was made (non offroad) testing it was clear that the Pat won´t win.

Ok, agree, but objectively Jeep Patriot or Compass in EU is overpriced, and that is main disadvantage...why we have to pay for it almost double price???

The only good thing about the price is that the diesel and petrol models were equally priced (in Estonia, at least), usually the diesel model of some vehicle is more expensive.

There have been some tests in Norway with the Pat against CRV, X-trail, Rav etc. They always say the same. The Jeep finish last or close. They dont like the looks inside and outside, and the engine is too loud. I agree, the enige is too loud and its cheap, but hell, id rather take the Pat every day than the other sad looking SUVs everyone else is driving around.

I have never seen a off-road test with small SUVs. Probably beacuse no one buys a small SUV for off-road use...

The Pat costs about the same as the competition, (usd 60.000) so there goes the price argument. The X3 which is a better, though uglier car, costs about 70.000 usd.

Sales figures confirms no cigar. About 500 sold total in 2007 and 2008! Compass figures are even worse!
- Im looking at the bright side: It stands out at the parking lot :smiley_thumbs_up:

I didn't think there were petrol models available to the Euro market?

Anyway, Ive found the one that I've seen a few months back in a mag... by Motor Trend: http://www.motortrend.com/oftheyear/suv/112_0712_2008_sport_utility_of_the_year/2008_jeep_patriot.html

Thomas, Pat's stand out no matter where you are. They still catch my eye even when Im visiting a big city here in N America :) That's the beauty of owning less-popular and under-rated automobiles... I remember when I first got my Pat last year (when it was nice and clean and shiny), I had quite a few head-turners, and even some comments like "hey is that the new Jeep...nice"... or "wow, gorgeous"... you don't hear much of that about the CRVs :D

AFor example, do you know what the worst vehicle rated in CR was? The Jeep Wrangler! Solely because it got low gas mileage, and had a rough ride.
*gigglesnort* Oh man, that is just... Just... Incredible! :D Can you say "incompetent journalist"? :)

Huh? Of course there are. The diesel version is just quite popular, that is all.

As for the prices between the Patriot and other manufacturers vehicles, the price difference might not be all that big but at least in Finland, it still exists. Although I must admit, I didn't look at prices of "on-road only" vehicles all that carefully so there might be some that are about the same price. But compared, for example, to the Suzuki Grand Vitara (now that they finally brought out a V6 version in Finland - a year after I made my purchase decision...), a Patriot Limited is cheaper by several thousand euros.

While the Patriot has its limits, there simply isn't a competitor that can beat it in price.

Err... You just try to fit the same amount of stuff into both and see how you'll do. And does the Panda even have a center differential lock or is it a totally open four wheel drive system?

(There is also the Suzuki Jimny which sells for a good 10k€ lower than the Patriot and is better in off-road. But that is also a tiny car compared to the Patriot, and on-road driving suffers from poor performance. Or, if you are a communist or a masochist, the Lada Niva is even cheaper... :p So yeah, there are vehicles that can compete with both price and off-roadability of the Patriot, but you always take a big hit in some other aspect such as cargo capability.)
