Hey guys, looking to get a backup camera that will plug into the back of my MyGig head unit but I'm curious as to how I should run the wire from outside the car on the rear bumper to inside and at the front of the car. I don't have much electrical work experience, but I'm open to learning.

Here is the camera I just purchased

I would assume I need to find two screws and drill into the bottom of the rear bumper to mount it, but as I said before, I'm not sure how to go about getting the wire into the car. Thanks for the help!

Depending on the size of the wiring, you may be able to route it through the license plate lights or the rear hatch handle. Mine was too big to fit so I unfortunately had to drill through the hatch behind the license plate then resealed it with a rubber grommet and clear silicone sealer. From there I just followed the factory wiring of the plate lights and tied it into my tail lights for power. The rca cable runs along the floorboards then up through behind the glove compartment into the head unit. Sounds complicated but I was able to do it without much electric experience. Good luck. The following link briefly describes my process. http://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=264417

I'll let you know in a week when I do mine but yes I was assuming the license plate light as well.

Alright so an update and new question:

I installed the lock pick and got the backup camera plugged in and tested and all is going well, the camera is powered and grounded using two provided wires in the snake for the lock pick so I did not need to tap into any existing wires like the reverse lights.

Now I am on the last step but cant figure out how to compete it. How to get the camera from inside the car (routed the wires through the car so it is currently sitting in my trunk) to the outside so I can mount it/screw it in. Is there a panel I should take off from the inside of the trunk?

Thanks!

Disregard, got it figured out

Yes you figured out that you need to route the wire through the taillight grommet unless you want to drill through something.

I know that this is an old thread. But I have an 11 Jeep Patriot and I am trying to install a backup camera(wired) that I got for Christmas. I have seen people mount it on the bottom of the bumper and am curious how you got the wires up through there. I took my spare out and everything and couldn't see how to access down there. I'm sure I'm missing something. I am going to be wiring mine through the head liner as my screen is actually on my review camera.
