Hi, I'm new to this site and am having serious issues with my car. Firstly a sort of rattling noise started on Thursday coming from drivers' side of the engine. Noticed the oil level was low, so replenished. On Monday (yesterday) car would not start/turn over. Couldn't jump it or bump it. Recovery came, said it wasn't the battery. Took it to a local mechanic who started it without any need for jump leads or anything.Just turned the ignition and it started. He said he thinks the rattling could be the fan belt. It drove perfectly yesterday, and this morning. Started it this evening and the battery light came on within minutes. Managed to drive it 8 miles to get home and it limped in, with hardly any power left atall. Battery light, abs light and airbag light all came on. Tried to restart it tonight and its completely dead. It's being recovered to Jeep dealership tomorrow, but would appreciate any advice as to what to expect. Only had it since August, bought second hand, no warranty left. Gutted if it's something serious!!

1st advice - get it away from the Jeep dealership and find a good local mechanic that knows diesels

an independant VW or Audi specialist would be my first choice - they know these engines inside out

I wouldn't trust a Jeep dealership with my diesel, unless they were holding my firstborn hostage

how old is a 58 reg?

how many miles?

what's the service history like?

oh.. WELCOME :)

harold is right, usually don't take it to a Jeep dealer, any competent garage can replace an auxiliary belt, although if it's rattling it could be the alternator pulley.. The Patriot 2.0 L CRD is a pretty strange bird when it comes to problems with the engine. It's a VW 2.0L PD engine, yet a VW dealer cannot read the software so cannot diagnose a lot of things (except for the obvious). A jeep dealer CAN read the ecu yet will be ignorant of the quirks of a PD engine or even how it works. For example, they will insist that it is a common rail diesel (probably because it says CRD on the tailgate) when in fact it really isn't.

DO NOT allow a Jeep dealer to service your car, they'll put the wrong oil in it which will eventually cost you a new camshaft. On that subject, which oil did you top it up with?

Take it to a local independent Jeep specialist if there's one near to you, they won't be able to do software updates (the only thing a Jeep dealer is useful for), but they can do pretty much everything else and will probably be familiar with the engine.

GET A WARRANTY. Warranty direct are pretty good as long as you service it according to the schedule (get the wear & tear and MOT cover - it will save you a fortune).

Ignore the Jeep schedule on the cambelt. Jeep say it should be changed at 70k miles. However, it is a VW BKD engine and VW say that the cambelt. water pump and auxiliary belt should be changed at 60k miles OR 4 years whichever is sooner. Your Patriot is more than 4 years old. If you have the history, check to see if the cam belt was changed. If it wasn't, do it right away.

Use only MANN filters.

How many miles has your Patriot covered?
