Hello all,
Just wondering if someone can tell me what the standard engine operating temp is? Even what temp range the gauge is: 0 degrees to what at max? Maybe the temperature of the thermostat? I'm just curious since the gauge shows nothing but a scale with no numbers. Thanks in advance
Denny

Mine runs about a "needle-width" under the half way mark--and has done so since new and now 90+K mi. I believe somewhere in the operator's manual there should be a reference to thermostat operating temp. If you're concerned, check it out--or just cruise into your local auto parts store and ask what the stock thermostat is....

Mine too, since day one! To begin with I didn't know either if that was normal or not because my Toyota always stayed within the lower quarter of the gauge but I've never seen it move higher so it must be normal :)

thanks

Thanks guys. Thats approximately where mine runs too. I was just curious as to what that temp actually was. I could find anything in the owners manual or service manual. Obviously it's a secret. Ha!

Jack,
nice stearman in the picture. I flew one just like it a few years ago. I am also a commercial instrument rated, former Ag Pilot. Small world

According to my Ultra-Gauge, depending on outside temp and traffic, it usually runs about 180-185. I seen it as low as 170 and as high as 210, though only a couple of times and once I started moving again, it dropped back below 195.

According to my scanguage II even in the summer most normal driving it never goes above 83-85c if it does go higher it stick at 90c for a while.

Hottest I've ever seen it (abuse off road:pepper:) is 115c and the factory guage was just a hair over half.

My old 08 Patriot ran warmer overall, 90-95c all the time, it may have had a diff temp thermostat.

Someone correct me, if wrong, but I was under the impression that most daily driver vehicle gauges are "idiot" gauges. They indicate ranges vs. actual linear measurements. Oil pressure, coolant temperature, charging voltage gauges just stay in the middle, indicating "o.k.", until they deviate a large amount.

Anyway, you scan gauge guys arrived with the expert answer. Most cars run around 200F +/- 20F coolant temperature, usually on the lower side of 200f.

Well, the Patriot's temp gauge doesn't show any actual numerical data, so i guess you could call it an idiot gauge. The gauge itself works as it should, even if only as a quick reference. But based on what we know, the half-way mark is about 185-190°F.
