Check this thread. It might answer some of your questions. Also, I position the cross rails all the way to the front and all the way back when using the basket. I ordered the basket on discountramps.com a few years back.

TJN i was looking through your thread and was wondering why you took your basket off then found this:

Man thanks a lot for those pictures. I was wondering how it would look. My basket is not on all the time. I only use it for camping trips as I can use those extra 2-3MPG.

Do you really think the basket kills the MPG by 2-3? or do you know for a fact?

The instructions that came with the basket state that the basket should not be kept on all the time. i was thinking this is just something the company has to say to avoid being sued for something, i would imagine most roof rack/basket manufacturers state the same for other roof racks. In your opinion and anyone else please chime in, can you see any negative or hazardous disadvantages to keeping this rack, or any rack on all the time? i was thinking of calling the company but i feel like they would just give me the same answer in the booklet for legal purposes..

I know for a fact that it kills a few MPGs. I average between 22-23 with stop and go traffic daily without the basket. Few weeks ago I went camping and put the basket on and still got the same MPG as I normally would during my daily commute. Without the basket I can get 25+ MPG driving on a highway.
