I've browsed through a number of the existing MyGIG threads (here, here, here, here and a few others) and feel pretty good about pressing forward to order a low speed RER unit as well as the Lockpick "Adapter", however I currently have the REC model and satellite radio, so there were a few things I was fuzzy on.

  • Are there any differences besides HD size that software updates can't address between the models of the RER?

EDIT: Model numbers for the MyGIG series found here and here

  • I read that the satellite tuner was located in rear driver side panel. Is it safe to assume that I'll be able to pull the wire out of the door and route it to the radio? Is it even the same adapter that can be plugged into a RER? Answer - NO :(

EDIT: Boy, don't I feel funny!

For those like myself with the Limited package who have factory Sirius (tuner P/N 05064075AD) and the Boston Acoustic audio package with sub (Kicker amp P/N 05064118AJ), you have to remove the spare tire cover and then the soft mold foam cover to reveal both items:

  • With my current REC unit, the silver bezel is definitely bigger than a standard one. Does anyone have a Mopar P/N for the standard that I can order from the dealership?

EDIT: I found this information from another forum online and ordered P/N TF381SFAB from moparpartsamerica.com for $60. Great service and quick shipping, definitely recommended!

2007 Patriot center bezel

YF381SFAB (non navigation) ($43.35 US MSRP)
YZ161SFAB (navigation REC, REJ) ($114.00 US MSRP)

2008 Patriot center bezel

YF381Z2AC (non navigation) ($83.15 US MSRP)
YZ161Z2AC (navigation REC, REJ) ($151.00 US MSRP)

  • With my current REC unit, since I have navigation I already have a GPS antenna - can this be "recycled" with the MyGIG? Answer - NO :(

  • Is there an iPod adapter for the low-speed RER unit? From what I am reading there is such a thing as a "UICI cable" but I'm not finding any other information except the name.

EDIT: Looks like there is an interface cable for the 2009 MyGIG, P/N 82211853, which is about $90. Nothing for the older 2007/2008 model of headunit.

I'm pretty excited - after 3 years of dealing with the clunky controls and having to spend an entire weekend hacking the NAV DVD to enter addresses while driving I've always felt cheated, especially after renting an 2008 Town & Country for a road trip a few years ago with the fully loaded MyGIG (minus UConnect). Hopefully this information can continue to help others looking for the freedom of a touchscreen interface.

Thanks for the help!

Chris

So I'm getting close to install:

  • Received the Lockpick Adapter Kit - photos to come
  • Received the replacement non-REC bezel

I would have received the headunit if today hadn't been a government holiday and the post office was delivering!

I started by pulling apart the dash to figure out the best plan of attack, and to see what I was missing.

Instead of removing the pillar covers and the piece near the windshield, I messed around and popped the top cover off by first shimming the spots in red then the ones in green:

Image

Once that was off, next was removing the cover around the gear shift, which was pretty easy - just grabbed underneith while in park and grabbed up. Once off, I had to put the car in neutral then removed 4 screws:

Image

Finally, another 6 screws to remove the bezel from the AC/heater controls by removing the screws in red and untightening the screws in green:

Image

I was now able to remove the screws holding in the head unit and discovered:

  • The Sirius is connected via the 10-pin connector on the back of the REC unit. This should make for an interesting time in extending the antenna plug from the rear driver panel to the headunit.
  • The navigation antenna (P/N 56038630AC) is square (link), while the one on the back of the RER unit is circular (link)
Image

Image

On top of that, I found out another little nugget - there is a bracket (aka Radio installation kit) (P/N 05291823AB) for the REC, and with the RER being smaller I'll probably have to hunt down a part number for the RER (or possibly even the REN) so it's in the dash nice and secure.

After doing a little more research this evening on other Chrysler-related vehicles that have performed the REC to RER conversion, they had to purchase the following:

1. Sirius satellite extension cable (P/N 05064159AD, $16 at moparpartsamerica.com)
2. GPS antenna for the MyGig (P/N 5064350AA, $28 at moparpartsamerica.com) - since I got mine of eBay it didn't come with the antenna
3. Terk SIR-SP splitter ($16 at amazon.com)

Looks like I'll be putting my Patriot back together for a few more days until more parts arrive!

So the MyGIG unit arrived on Tuesday and she's a beauty!

Here's the lockpick adapter and all it's glory. I also got the multimedia cable (not shown) along with the microphone for use with the uConnect

Image

Also I received the non-navigation bezel; here are the two in comparison:

Here's the factory connectors along with the antenna adapter that came with the Lockpick kit:

After it's all said and done, here it is in the car playing a Disney movie:

The problem with the non-navigation bezel is that it needs a little work before it can be installed:

And here's the final result:

Unfortunately I don't have the steadiest hand when it comes to the dremel, but at least it works! I also make a small cutout for the microphone:

All that's left is the Sirius cable extension and the Navigation antenna

Lockpic adaptor version?

Greetings,
Great write up!
I don't visit or post much, but have been watching lately as I am pondering the install of a MyGig RER. I presently have an RAQ with UConnect Bluetooth and use a nokia x6 phone which I plan to retain for use with the RER. I mention this because the Chrysler UConnect is the best system I have used on any car for handsfree voice recogintion. I have previously used parrot and nokia ck300 with various phones and none even come close to the UConnect. The UConnect even downloads my phonebook from the Nokia (even thought it is not supposed to) and voice recognizes all entries without inputting tags. I use my phone extensively in conjuction with my work as an onroad salesman. I know the MyGig (according to reports) will do all of this with its installed UConnect.
I only have one question--In your pictures, the lockpick you show resembles the latest version 3 and all the sellers I have contacted say they only have version 2 and for my car (2008) there is no version 3. Could you or someone tell me the part number for the lockpic?
I want to finish by saying that this Jeep is the best I have ever owned and my past Jeeps have been CJ7, Wrangler Unlimited, Liberty, Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee. I am a Street Jeeper, and the Patriot has the best combination of ride, comfort, storage, towing, fuel mileage and features of all of the past Jeeps.
This is a great forum and I appreciate all of the knowledge that is offered here. Thank you, everyone.

the lockpic adaptor is different in software to talk with the older models etc, they function exactly the same as the normal type, to be honest upgradeabilty for them is not really a feature needed, bottom line they do exactly what is needed,
cheers

Here is my latest news. I have decided to install a mygig. I have a 2010 model on order that should arrive next week. Today I received my MyGig adaptor and after opening it I am happy to report that it is the latest version with USB plub for updates. The USB may be unnecessary but it is nice to have it just in case.
I am going to use the UConnect microphone (not the one in the mirror) as I now use the UConnect Microphone mounted to the left (near driver) A post. This works well for voice recognition and is closer than if using the microphone in the mirror.
My Plan is to also install a back up camera and will let the group know how that goes.
As far as cost of the MyGig--I was able to buy new one (as claimed by the seller) for $750. If it is indeed new, it is a good deal, if not new then I have to search some more.

Sorry for the hiatus, but with some things going on at work and in personal life I haven't had a chance to get back on here.

To answer the question about total cost, I think I paid around $1250 for:

  • MyGig - $600
  • Lockpick Adapter - $300
  • Non-Nav Bezel - $60
  • Sirius satellite extension cable - $16
  • GPS antenna for the MyGig - $28
  • Terk SIR-SP splitter - $16
  • 12" LCD Headrests - $175
  • Misc parts (wiring, etc) - $15

I also had some initial wiring issues with the LCD headrests on the accessory power output from the multimedia harness from the headunit and ended up having to put it on the constant power output for everything to work OK. The only thing that really kills me is how crappy I did at the Dremel of the non-nav bezel and that at some point I'd REALLY like to get this done again but a little more professionally.

Beyond that, I'm totally happy with the investment and with our recent 26+ hour drive from Minneapols to Memphis to Cincinatti and back to Minneapolis the kids were pretty occupied as well as my wife in the front seat. :smiley_thumbs_up:

Nice job.

I agree, the dremelling of the bezel is the worst part of this, thankfully for the caliber i was able to order a 2009 caliber bezel and it fit perfect (The caliber received the interior upgrade in 2010, so the only thing that changed in 2009 were the radios)

I installed both front and rear cameras as well, note that if you have a front camera with a manual, it doesn't seem to engage when you are "parking" but you can turn it on manually

UPDATE: I see on eBay someone is selling the "MyGig Adapter Bezel Filler" for the REC bezel, and seeing as how crappy of a job I did with the Dremel on mine I'll probably end up buying one. For those of you looking to do the REC to MyGig conversion, I say save a little extra on the cost for the bezel and the headache to cut a REN bezel down!

Great job Thetooall!!

I was wondering if it was possible to fit a MyGIG REN 20 gb non-NAV system into a European CRD Pat ´08. In some posts it was said that was no possible but paying attention to your creation, seems to be feasible. In the features of the REN system, it is said that effectively it does not fit in ´07-08 Pats, but why?, is the problem just related to the bezel or there are some problems with the pins of sockets, plugs or something similar??. I thought that just changing the original non-NAV bezel for the NAV one, the problem would be solve.
Unfortunately, people of Jeep away the USA do not have any idea about this questions, thinking sometimes that instead of having a Jeep I have an Eastern car due to the huge limitations that the brand presents in Europe. In addition, the guys of Mopar said me that they do not send nothing away the US, grrrr.

If I can not upgrade my old-fashion REG system with the REN , I will try to plug a REQ one that is not bad at all.

Cheers to everybody!!!

I am going to pop in a dual din dvd player and 2 headrest monitors for my kids in my wifes pat, I am thinking about just cutting the standard bezel and then if i can't sand it perfect to match and then repaint, I may just line the hole with some black rubber 1/4" tubing where it looks like factory trim.

Thanks, I may have to do the same. My REC screen has gone haywire and displays crazy lines etc more than half the time, though the radio, CDs and Sat work fine. Looks like one needs a new faceplate too. I'm guessing I it would cost ~ $1000 for a used MyGig ? (I don't need the DVD headrest thingies).

When I started this project back in February I didn't have that as an available option so I unfortunately had to do the cutting - blah!

Speaking of blah - I just spent the last 8 weeks without a headunit because on a Sunday night everything was fine but Monday morning it wouldn't power on.

So after some initial troubleshooting it seemed like the LockPick Adapter, and after a HORRIBLE experience with Coastaletech on getting it replaced, it finally came back with no change so i guess it's the headunit after all. Guess that's the risk of getting a unit off of eBay, but at least it's cheaper than $2000 brand new from Mopar!
