Hello. I have a 2007 Compass that has this connector in the car. See pictures. Does anyone know what it is for?

It's not factory, the place where it's mounted is the access hole for the shift lock release.

Just taking a wild guess here, but there was an option for a remote USB port inside the glove box (pic below).

Open the glove box and see if there's a cable plugged into it.

Someone might have added the connector to the console to make it easier to access, though it's an RJ45.

I've never seen anyone add wired internet to a car before... interesting. I would trace the wires to see where they go.

Thx but there is no USB port in the glove box in my car. Yes its strange that there is an internet connector in the car.
Interesting. It is more like a wired telephone or internet connection but where does it go and what does it do?

I don't know what it is for. Haven't disassembled the console yet to find out where the wires go.

It's hard to tell from your picture, but it looks like a telephone line connector (RJ11), versus RJ45, is that correct? You can do a lot with wires, they don't necessarily need to be used for intended development. This looks like the previous owner was "commed-up" as a mobile comms outpost. Connections stay, equipment/cords leave when operator departs the vehicle, just one guess from many possibilities. Maybe you can make use of it, keep us posted.

Pretty sure it's RJ45 and for sure no idea why someone would.

That's where you connect to other Jeeps for the LAN party! Kidding of course.

That is interesting. I'm not familiar with anything that would require that jack added to the vehicle. And I'd think the twisted pair wiring behind it would have a lot of interference. If you decide to investigate let us know what you find!

Although it looks like a RJ11 (see previous posts), I know that some GMRS/ham radios use RJ45 similar connectors for the remotes (microphones, push to talks). It could be the previous owner had that installed!

EDIT: Saw the picture of the connector, definitely RJ45. Midlands MXT line of GMRS radios use that for the remotes: MXT575 MicroMobile®Two-Way Radio

8-pin. Maybe part of the new "Patriot Network", using a CAT5 connector?😂 Best guess echoes what Sandstone said. Perhaps a homemade extension of the USB in the glove box???

Since we're all guessing, I'm gonna guess that a previous owner had to use the manual shifter release and managed to lose the cover plug, so they just stuck in something that fit. And that it's not hooked up to anything.
