Hello!

I have a 2014 Jeep Patriot and recently ran an emissions pre-test and the readings show O2 sensor "not ready", while everything else passes.
Clicking on it doesn't specify anything about the error, nor does it say which sensor is causing this. It just opens a prompt that explains the importance of this test during emissions part of the inspection (I'm in NY). There are no error codes on the scanner and no check engine light, so I don't think it's a bad sensor. Could this be just pointing at something else? I know I had an old EVAP error code P0441, I was ready to have that taken care of, but it went away before I could do that, so I put it aside for now instead. Could the two things be related? Or is this O2 sensor issue all about something else?

I don't know if the old code is related to the O2 sensor issue or not, but you could try running the O2 sensor readiness procedure (PDF attached) and see if it makes a difference.

Did you recently change the battery or have it disconnected for a while? If so you just may need to complete the drive cycle to make all the IMs ready again. Im not sure about chryslers but for fords there are certain driving conditions that the computer needs to see before setting the ims to ready. This is pretty much to keep people from just resetting the computer to make a check engine light go away temporarily for emission inspections. My 2001 mustang has not passed nys inspection due to 3 ims refusing to be ready and Ive driven the heck out of it. All live data shows that its all working fine but just wont set. Nys is a pain in the ass. LOL. Also for 2001 cars anyway, youre allowed to have one im not set and still pass inspection. I dont know about 2014 model year cars though. It might be different for them.

My o2 readiness was the last to set for me. It took driving about 40 minutes up a 40 mph, rural road, 18 mile long drive with several traffic lights to get in the speeds and stop and go that the pdf above wants.

Thanks all... I drove for over 50 miles before the 02 sensor was ready. all is clear now. My old Hyundai used to clear quickly compared to this one and it was worrying me to the point where I thought there was a problem. All the help is greatly appreciated.

A lady I know had a similar problem with her 2002 Toyota RAV4 not being "ready" before her required emissions test. She had her battery replaced shortly before this. I read the Toyota procedure driving cycle to make ready, and it read like an impossible science experiment. Drive at various speeds only, for certain distances only which is nearly impossible with traffic patterns, wave a chicken over your head and yell Whoopy! Nothing seemed to work for her. She finally had to take it to a shop prior to testing, where they were eventually able to get it to show ready. Some makes/models can be a real PITA!

First of all, Unless you want to start from scratch...do NOT reset or clear the codes. I've gone on all kinds of chats and forums, watched YouTube on how to complete Jeep drive cycles and they didn't work. Last smog, I gave up and paid the Jeep dealer $100 to do it for me to pass my smog. 2yrs later smog is due again in CA but I replaced my battery recently so the emissions weren't ready. Dang! I drove 60mph steady for 18-20mi then city driving and it reset the Catalytic. However, O2 Sensor still not ready. That one will fail you. Went to the dealer and the estimate was a whopping $398!! I walked outside with Uncle Russ from Ozark and told him I was hoping it was $100 and afraid I'll have to get my keys back.

Here's the trick...He told me he used to work smog for Jeep. Listen up Mofos!...Take your Jeep on the hwy and drive steady 60mph for 2miles....then accelerate to 70mph for 2miles...let off the gas without braking back to 60mph for 2miles. Then do a few minutes of stop and go city/town driving and this will work. Well WTF...it worked and only took me 15min, saved me money and got my smog.
