A bad rear wheel bearing can indeed cause a loud roaring sound.
When mine went bad, there wasn't much change when driving down the road and swerving back and forth, but I would get tire chirp doing tight, full lock turns on asphalt.

Or if it's a fwd / 2wd and it's for certain that the brakes aren't in anyway engaging, then perhaps the rear wheel bearing is binding and needs replaced.

I had the same problem, the mechanic checked it and couldn’t figure it out, I couldn’t pinpoint where the noice was coming from. I raised the car and tried wiggling the tires and listening for noise but I see or feel that anything was wrong, I went ahead and ordered the right rear wheel hub, which includes the wheel bearing and replaced it, problem solved, I did the left one also just to be on the safe side. One more thing once I had the bearing off I could tell it was bad when I spun it.
