Subject: Jeep Patriot 2007 issues
Date: Sun, 20 Mar 2011 22:03:56 -0400

Hi Sergio, I was advised to contact you with regards to my issues with my 2007 Jeep Patriot.

Here is the story,

The Jeep Patriot was purchased in May 12, 10 at XXX Scarborough, Ontario. It was purchased as a used vehicle with 62,399km’s off a lease. I like this vehicle a lot, and have lots of pride in Chrysler and Jeep vehicles. I experienced 2 issues with my Jeep since it was purchased, Bad Wheel bearings which I paid for to replace all 4 of them, and rear water leak through the dome light, an issue I am presently experiencing.

Eversince then I encountered issues with the Jeep making humming noise when driving. They advised because the vehicle was purchased used, it was the tires that were worn and needed to be replaced. So I decided to hold that off until Oct 2010, when I purchased 4 brand new tires and still experienced the same humming noise. That is when I brought the vehicle back to XXX and they took it for a test drive. They then advised it was the 2 Front Wheel Bearings and that it was not covered under powertrain warranty. The brochure that was given to be stated that Front Wheel Bearings are considered power train. They said because the car was purchased within a year they would cover the cost of the 2 Wheel Bearings and I will need to pay $360+tax for the labour which I paid. I spoke to the service manager and he was no help. This repair should have been done prior to being sold as a used vehicle. The vehicle still had a humming noise after the repair, this is when the mechanic said both back wheel bearings need to be replaced also. This time the dealer quoted me $780 for 2 Rear Wheel Bearing and Labour. I asked if anything can be done about the pricing? The advised they will get back to me on that and never did, so I got that changed at a local garage.

I also experienced a strange issue with a water leak at the back of the vehicle. It leaks through the Rear Dome Light and I do not have a moonroof. I experienced this issue since last year when I purchased the car, I did some reasearch and found out that it was a common issue. So I went to a local Canadian Tire and purchased some Caulk and it seems to have fixed the issue until the last rain storm we had last week. That is when I noticed water learking through the rear dome light. He rear headliner was soaked. I took it back to XXX Chrysler and they advised they will need to call in a company called LeakPro and I would have to pay for diagnose and all the repairs. I advised the advisor the vehicle is less than 1 year old and purchased at the location. He said he will check my VIN and get back to me but hasn’t got back to me yet. It has been 2 weeks. This is the reason I am writing this email to Chrysler and hopefully I will be contacted about this issue and hopefully a resolution will be met. Please have a look at the below link as many are experiencing this issue.

I have already sealed the entire back hatch area, but it still leaks. My headliner is not wet when this happens, the only thing wet is the light.

My 2007 Patriot didn't leak the first two years, then came in with a vengeance. It started doing so about 1000 miles after the warranty expired, incidentally. I had them replace the seal once which seemed to help for about 6 months. It's still totally inconsistent.

Checking out the entire water catch area of the sunroof under the seal and not seeing anything wrong, I believe there is probably a crack in the rear area metal that I can't see due to the sunroof glass and other mechanical stuff blocking my view. But there's not way to tell for sure w/o removing the entire sunroof.

I've gotten a few unplanned baths. Ive had my pat back to the body shop. The first time it was plugged drains. I believe they run down along the windsheild and terminate in the wheel well. The guy put the lpa to it and blew the line all to pieces. Ended up replacing all the lines. They were plugged solid. That solved the problem for a few weeks. Then again I went out to go to work backed down the driveway and splash. Water all down over me the dash. I dont know how the stereo still works.

Anyways I took it back and they used a water plant water can (low tech is sometimes the best with these things.) Anyways from what we found out it was a design flaw. It is supposed to leak.... YEA RIGHT, more like something they didnt foresee and never fixed in the design phaze. This is why the drainpan is around the sunroof. IF it rains hard enough more water will flow in then the drains can handle and it will overflow and lay inside the headliner. This effect is multiplied if the vehical is not sitting on level ground... I still havent heard of a fix. If anyone does PM me a link or solution. I have thought about taking marine sealant and sealing the bugger closed as i dont use it very much anyhow....

Did they check the rear drains also? If so, how do you get back there to check/clear them? (the sunroof glass is in the way)

I have the same problem with my 2008 Jeep Patriot. It's out of warranty and all this year it's been in and out of the dealership. I bet if enough of us started to complain maybe something would happen.

Well as far as my research goes.. here's what I know.

The drain tubes run along the pillars down towards the floorboards on each side. I have seen someone pull up the floor of the Pat, remove the footrest, and locate the tube.. The tube goes into a grommet which goes to exterior of car. These tubes diameter are entirely too small. Pollen, dust, and just about anything can clog them. A short term solution is blowing air through the tubes to remove any debris causing blockage.. another option that I've seen is to cut the very end of this tube, as it is tapered.. and that will allow it to flow more freely. I had water in my dome light when I bought my 10 Pat. Advised the dealer who said he would address.. and I haven't had leakage despite lots of rain.

Haven't had to try any methods but at the very least, try and locate the drain tube and look for kinks, splits, or blockage.

2015 rear leak in my pat, only 40k miles

I just bought a 2015 Pat a week ago and if the 7 days ive had it, 3 of them its been back at the dealer. The back area is leaking like a faucet. Light is burnt out and now its starting to smell a bit. They are trying to fix it and so far they cant stop the leak even after using CTV caulk. So even in older models this seems to be a problem!!!!!!

FYI.. had the same issue on my 2007 Jeep Patriot.. You should remove the spare Tire and check that area, as mines was all moldy... Guess it was leaking for some time.

Anyhow, I will update you guys.. I emailed the Chrysler CEO as I didn't want to spend time at the dealer and paying for some manufacturing BS.

I got a call back the next day and they set me up to a dealership that had in-house water leak test. They couldn't find it, so ended up pulling the whole headliner and resealing the roof with that hard factory stuff.. Best part was the rock hard silicone stuff they use is an exact paint match, so you can't tell.

The repair would of cost me $348.00 plus a weeks rental but it was totally free.

I had 80000km on the Jeep patriot, past the 3 years warranty.

Just a FYI..
What is the email address that you used? Can you share it please? This situation is so frustrating!

Thought I would add to this existing thread. My granddaughter recently bought a 2009 Jeep Patriot Rocky Mountain Edition with a leaking sunroof.

The dealer (used car lot) tried all kinds of hatchet jobs to fix it and finally gave up. They offered to give us our deposit back or knock $1000 off as they stated it needed a new sunroof. I had already researched the issue and was fairly confident I could fix it myself. They did soak the interior 'testing' all of their non-fixes so we had to pull out the entire interior anyway for steam cleaning and baking soda dusting. We vacuumed gallons of water out. Idiots.

Sorry I did not take pics except for the grommet and a bare interior but I fixed the leak for good for about $12.00 and a lot of labor.

What I found upon pulling the drain tubes loose from the sunroof was that both front tubes were clogged. I was going to install the drain tubes and grommets called for in the TSB but there was a delay in getting the parts so I went to the hardware store and bought clear PVC tubing, 3/8" i.d. to make my own drain tubes.

When I removed the old grommets from the firewall they were indeed the 'bad' kind having a 90 degree bend. They also had 'fingers' or whatever inside (to catch debris????, BRILLIANT) further reducing the drain area to a pinhole. They were clogged with seeds and just mush consisting of who knows what. I took a razor knife and cut the 90 off, then I reamed the hole out to fit my entire 3/8" tubing completely through the grommet so there is now a 3/8" diameter hole to drain the water. I turned the grommet around backwards so it could be inserted from the engine side of the firewall first as there is absolutely NO WAY to get the grommets pushed in from the inside. I could not peel back the jute enough to even see the grommet from inside and wasted most of a day trying. I inserted the new tubing from the engine side and was able to grab it and route it properly up to the sunroof. Installed new tubing in the rear although they were easy (and were not clogged).

Ran gallons of water from a garden hose all over the top of the car and it dripped right into the channel as it is supposed to and drained away with ease. I did seal a few rivet holes and other penetrations outside of the main drain channel just as added insurance.

We thoroughly cleaned every square inch of bare interior and upholstery/carpeting and it looks and smells great, and we got a great price.

We also have a 2009 Patriot (without a sunroof) so now there are 2 in our driveway
