Hi All. I have a 2014 2.4L Jeep Patriot Auto. South African bought.

A local mechanic did the head gasket a month ago. I am unsure if he did the timing on the cams right. However, he somehow forgot to fill oil into the vehicle and tried starting it up. It did not start on the first few tries. It did start up and ran for a minute or two and then switched off. This was said to me by his apprentice. Worst mechanic ever. He also did not change the oil filter.

When I received vehicle it starts but has codes: P0017 and C121C.
Vehicle is in a limp mode.
I have tried re doing the timing 5 times in the last 2 weeks or so and these codes just reappear.
Cleared codes, relearnt cam and crank and still in limp mode.

Please help !!!!!!

Cause of occurrence Engine or automatic transmission error P0017: Possible causes and troubleshooting tips that led to the error:
Causes of occurrence: Error P0017 occurs if the actual camshaft position is too late compared to the maximum retard position or too ahead of the maximum advanced position. Continued adjustment in this case may result in engine damage due to piston impact on the valves. Symptoms of code P0017: hard start of the engine, the engine may run, but with reduced performance, the engine may crank but will not start, the engine may make extraneous noises, the engine may start and run incorrectly (badly).

Possible causes of failure: Timing chain stretched or toothed belt skipped tooth due to wear, Timing belt/chain misalignment, Toned ring on crankshaft slipped/broken, Tone ring on camshaft slipped/broken, Defective crankshaft position sensor, Poor position sensor camshaft, Damaged wiring to crankshaft/camshaft sensor, Damaged timing belt/chain tensioner. Troubleshooting Tips: First of all, it is recommended to look at the manual (specialized literature) for the maintenance and repair of your car. Code P0017 is the result of a malfunction in the crankshaft and camshaft system. The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and camshaft position (CMP) sensor work in concert to control spark/fuel delivery. They both consist of a reflex or tone ring that runs over a magnetic pickup that generates a voltage to indicate position. The crankshaft sensor is part of the primary ignition system and functions as a "trigger". It determines the position of the crankshaft relay, which sends information to the PCM or the ignition module (depending on the vehicle) to control the ignition timing. The camshaft position sensor detects the position of the camshafts and feeds the information to the PCM. The PCM uses the CMP signal to determine the start of the injector sequence. What links these two shafts and their sensors is the timing belt or chain. First, visually inspect the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor and their harnesses for damage. If you notice broken/frayed wires, repair and recheck. If you have access to the crankshaft and camshaft mechanisms, check if the labels are set correctly. Remove the crankshaft cam and harmonica, inspect the tone rings for proper alignment and make sure they are not loose or damaged or that they have not cut off the key that aligns them. If they are installed correctly, replace the sensor. If the sensor signal is normal, check that the timing chain/belt is properly aligned. If it is misaligned, check if the tensioner is damaged, which could cause the chain or belt to slip a tooth or several teeth. Also make sure the belt/chain is not tight. Repair and recheck.

UPDATE:

Jeep Patriot 2.4L - 2014 Model Automatic

Vehicle is finally fixed and back on the road. Drives like a dream with alot of extra power.
Very unconventional how the P0017 code was fixed. Not very proud of the quick fix but delivering vehicle back to dealer it was purchased from AM: tomorrow for a full refund as agreed with them.

Thanks for the info Oleksii.
Appreciated.
