This has been a reoccurring issue on my 2011 Jeep Patriot. Upon further inspection, it looks like the fuel neck metal is poorly made. It is pitting and causing the gas cap to improperly seal itself upon closing the cap. Hence, the reason the check engine light comes on. I tried using a scuff pad to try and smooth the seal surface, but, the pitting is more severe upon closer inspection

Try cleaning off the o-ring on the cap, and adding a light coat of vaseline to the o-ring and the neck.

You might consider replacing the gas cap just for the new rubber seal. If your fuel neck is pitted then the pits might have caused some damage on gas cap seal. plus the newer rubber will seal better then the old rubber.
