Hi everyone. My 2017 Patriot FD-2 is coming up on 48,000 miles and I think it would be a good idea to go ahead and get the transmission fluid changed before the Texas summer really kicks in. Since this is my first time with this, I have questions:

Do I go to the dealer, or can any transmission shop handle it?

What should I expect to pay?

Dealer can handle it, though I would imagine a specialized transmission shop would be better equipped. Plus most dealers give the whole "it's a sealed unit" spiel, then the owner's manual says 120k miles before fluid change, but it'll actually go bad if it isn't done by about 60k. And fluid level is critical, which a dealer service department is less and less likely to know as time goes on. If you don't bring your own fluid, most places in this country charge about $300. I would recommend you bring your own fluid, either Amsoil(10/10): https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/transmission-fluid/automatic/synthetic-cvt-fluid/

All three can probably be found somewhere locally, and perhaps a bit cheaper, but those are the top three options. You'll also need a gasket for the drain pan(perhaps a new drain pan with a plug if you wanna make it easier for whoever does this for you in the future) and maybe the new filters as well.

Update: I got the service done at a local transmission shop where I’ve had work done on other cars, and everything seems to be fine. Except ... when I accelerate at higher speeds, the engine sounds louder than usual. The noise isn’t a whine. It’s deeper and just sounds like a loud engine.

Is it just my imagination? If the pan was replaced, could a different part cause a different sound? Any ideas? Everything else seems to be working perfectly.

I doubt a pan change would make the difference, it didn't on mine.

To do the cooler filter change, they would need to remove the air intake/snorkel over the battery that connects to the airbox, so the battery and tray could be removed.

If the intake/snorkel wasn't re-installed the engine noise would be louder on acceleration.

Thank you — that’s exactly what the problem was. They completely neglected to reattach the snorkel. It was just sitting loose on top of the battery. I’m lucky it didn’t block the intake.

It makes me wonder what else they neglected.
