caliper pin starting to round off.

I've noticed some abnormal wear on the rear rotors. The rears have only been done at a shop for whatever reason. I wanted to service them today but I for the life of me can't break the torque on the top pin. I wish i could an impact on it, but that darn brake hose is in the way. We're going away next weekend so I dont want to get to the point of no return. So hear I am asking for some suggestions. I thought about getting my nutcracker started into the head of the bolt and maybe getting some kind of leverage with that. Help! :)

I got the rear right off. well not off completely because of the where the brake hose mounts. There was a ton of corrosion on the mating surface and threads. The pads and rotors were installed less than 3000 miles. I have my doubts that they actually lubed the top slide or ever removed the the bolt to expose the threads. I couldn't budge the rear left anjd rouned the heck out it.

My last brake job saw me having to replace the right rear caliper because I couldn't get that top pin off. Napa had a new caliper kit in stock for a good price, thankfully. I did, however, apply a good coating of anti-seize to the pins when installing.
I thought I had replied to this already. I had taken it back in October and they replaced the pin. They been getting come backs from an employee that has been let go a while ago.

So this past weekend while preparing to do my rear hubs, I planned to service the brakes. Wouldn't you know that the same side I was having issues with had so much rust in the bore. The side I did was perfect. It leaves me to wonder about how many shops don't service brakes real good.

I am biased to think that many shops do lousy work. That's why I still prefer to do as much as possible. I rely on a good professional MOPAR mechanic that moonlights at home for jobs I farm out - he's very competent and trustworthy. Beyond that, it takes a huge effort to find a good shop. I avoid all of the chain type establishments (i.e., Firestone).

Here's a pic after my rear drum brake job this past weekend on a 10 year old rust belt Patriot. Very clean. Took me over 4 hours total to pay attention to detail, something the pros cannot do. Everything is original, except the shoes.

That is a very good job. Wow!

I get they can't pay that kind of attention to detail. If its in as a comeback because their previous tech didn't lube the pin, you think they would pay extra attention and make sure it's done.
I used to have one shop that I trusted with things that I either couldn't do myself or just didn't want to do myself. Then about 2 years ago I had a rear wheel bearing go bad in the middle of winter and I just didn't want to deal with crawling around on my driveway in the snow. I dropped my Pat off at the shop on my way to work before they opened and picked it up on my way home after they closed. On the way home from the shop the rear brakes started to make noise. Noise got louder and louder every time I touched the pedal. By the time I got home (less than 5 miles) it sounded horrible. I pulled the wheel off real quick to see what the cause was and found that they somehow forgot to install the inner brake pad, so the caliper piston was directly touching the rotor. It destroyed the rotor. The next day I had it towed back to the shop. I didn't tell them what I had found, just that the brakes "sounds like a pad is missing". I got a call mid-afternoon telling me its ready. When I went to pick it up they told me it was a loose dust shield. I asked "are you sure"? And told them that I pulled the wheel the night before and took pictures. Then they fessed up, but all they did was just put the pad back. They did replace the rotor after I bitched. Told them I'll never be back. Still looking for another shop.
