Introduction
This “How To” is specific to a 2011 Jeep Patriot with SiriusXM using an Astrium GEE-0809 head unit. However, Astrium is an authorized Chrysler builder and these head units use the OEM housing and all OEM connections. These steps can be applied, with very minor modifications, to the installation of most factory MYGIG/Media Center head units as well due to the factory design of the Astrium head unit.

The Astrium GEE-0809 is fully compatible with all factory options and features( UConnect Button, Steering Wheel Volume/Channel Controls, The 9-Speaker Boston Acoustics Premium Sound Package, etc... )EXCEPT for SiriusXM radio. The head unit does not support satellite radio service. No adapters or harnesses needed for factory options/features to work. The head unit is backup camera ready( uses the factory plug/location ). A MOPAR camera kit or an adapter with a factory plug to RCA input is required to use aftermarket cameras.

The GEE-0809 is a Low Speed CANBUS model and can be used in any Chrysler brand vehicle capable of running a MYGIG/Media Center Low Speed CANBUS head unit( use GEE-3012 for High Speed CANBUS applications ).

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1 - Disconnect your negative battery cable( 10MM box wrench ). Wait 2 minutes to allow airbags to discharge before you proceed. You need to remove the air-box inlet tube to disconnect the cable.





Step 2 - Using a plastic dash trim tool, pop the bottom corner of the radio bezel out so you can get a finger in behind. Use the special tool designed for this purpose so you do not damage your dash or bezel. Work along the bottom of the bezel, while pulling towards you until free, then work up each side to the top until bezel is 100% free. Don’t go crazy pulling but you will have give it a good tug to free it.

Once the bezel is free carefully lean the top back towards you so you can reach down behind it to unplug the AC/HVAC controls. Make sure you depress the tab on the green plug before trying to pull it out or it will not come free. Set bezel aside where it won’t get damaged.

Step 3 - Remove 4 screws holding head unit. Slide head unit out and disconnect AM/FM antenna(white) and if equipped the SiriusXM antenna(yellow). Unplug radio harness( depress tab on bottom ).





Step 4 - Install GPS antenna. Follow the antenna mfg’s mounting instructions if provided. I mounted my GPS antenna on the windshield, above the rear view mirror and next to the headliner. It doesn’t show unless you look for it and it receives an unobstructed and clear signal.

Clean windshield with alcohol pad and when dry attach GPS antenna using double sided 3M tape. Tuck the antenna lead up and into the headliner to hide it as you work towards the passenger side of the vehicle( lead shows in photo below but is hidden now ). Using a trim tool or small flat screw driver pop the A-Pillar screw cover plug and take out the phillips head screw inside. CAREFULLY pop the trim piece off and set aside where it won’t be damaged.

Route the GPS antenna lead down the A-Pillar to the dash and secure in a couple spots with zip ties. Use caution routing and securing the antenna lead inside the A-Pillar trim if you have a sunroof so that you do not damage the sunroof drain tubes. Open the glove box and squeeze sides in like you would do if changing the cabin air filter so you can lower it all the way down out of the way.

Feed the antenna lead down through the gap on the side of the dash and into the opening behind the glove box. Feed the GPS antenna lead across and into the radio opening. Secure the antenna lead in a few spots with zip ties. Carefully coil up any extra antenna lead, leaving enough to attach to the head unit with it slid out and secure with a zip tie so it stays coiled up.

You will not be using the factory SiriusXM antenna(yellow) as this head unit does not support that feature. Use a zip tie and secure it to the GPS antenna lead so it does not fall down inside the dash. Make sure the GPS and AM/FM antenna leads and the radio harness are not tangled and have slack.

NOTE - I am lacking some photos here as they didn't come out good due to lighting and/or poor focus. Sorry. I hope my explanations are enough to make it clear.









Step 5 - Plug the blue GPS antenna lead to the blue GPS input on the GEE-0809. Plug the white AM/FM antenna lead to the white AM/FM input on the GEE-0809. Plug the factory head unit harness into the GEE-0809 in the same location you unplugged it from on your factory head unit.

Being careful not to pinch/kink any wires or antenna leads slide the GEE-0809 head unit into place. Reinstall the 4 retaining screws into the stock location. Before proceeding any further reconnect the negative battery cable so you can verify proper function of the new head unit.

Once you verify the new head unit is functioning properly, and that you have adequate GPS signal strength, reinstall the radio bezel and pop the glove box back into place. CAREFULLY reinstall the A-Pillar trim and you are done.

NOTE - I am sorry about the video moving especially near the end where the camera was sort of resting against me and thus was moving because of my breathing. It makes the video look like I am on the ocean. I was trying to do everything one handed so I could hold the camera and it made it tough. And yes, I realize I forgot to push the USB cover back on. :D

EDIT( 04/07/2013 ) - Video's lost when my Photobucket account had issues. Will try and redo them at some point.

NOTICE - My Photobucket account got hacked, crashed, they had troubles, or something???? ALL of the photos on the How To are gone. :doh:

I lost almost every photo I had on there and some of them I don't have other copies( figured it was safer to keep them there :icon_rolleyes: ).

UPDATE( 05/26/2013 ):

I got sick of the Astrium brand logo showing every time the nav system boots up so I experimented a bit this morning to see if I could change it without messing with anything. The file I had to replace is in a protected folder but I was able to do it quite easily actually.

This is what I was seeing every time the nav system started...






As said I did a quickie test this morning to see if I could change it and this was what I came up with. I will run this for a bit and do something better later. Probably will change it often so it doesn't bore/bug me now that I know it is so easy.

I wish I could get rid of the mfg's brand/logo on the head unit itself( shows that same basic shot from above when the radio is 1st turned on briefly )but I have no access to the hard drive to do it. At least I don't have to look at it now when the nav system boots. :smiley_thumbs_up::smiley_thumbs_up:

Very nice setup. Do you know if this or any other OEM replacement unit can handle the addition of amps and subs etc? I would like to run some soundstream gear that i have but would like to keep the OEM appearence.

Well, I have the Premium Sound system in my 2011 so that is 9 speakers and the factory amp. Powers it all up just fine. However, there are no inputs on the back other than the factory connectors you find on OE radios. You would have to know how to wire it up.

OK NHP I went with your advice and ordered mine this morning. Looking forward to getting it s they have it in stock and I wont be home to receive it for until the 22 figured i would go the free shipping route. Now how did you change the screen and can I replace it with say family pictures?

Who needs sat radio when ya can plug in your Ipod and go?
Not all people like IPods, I like the ability to have over 100 stations of any type of audio. ( talk radio not too good on an iPod ). Also like that its random, and I can be surprised what's played next and I often hear songs I totally forgot about.
So, no Sirius option for a lot of people is a let down. Especially when you look at the cost of that thing. Leaving that option out, it's just stupid in that price range.

#1 - I never use Sat radio. It is not a loss to me

#2 - these radios are made to be sold outside the US where Sat radio is not available/common. They are actually sold as MOPAR units outside the US.

#3 - it cost $996 brand new and has everything a MYGIG would that costs $2500 brand new other than Sat. Sat is not worth $1500.

The cost was well worth it for true OEM fit and function. Again, I don't use Sat radio. For my needs and wants this radio was 100% the right choice.

Now please refrain from turning a How To into some kind of peeing contest and go bother someone else.

NHP How did you go about changing your background on the unit? Is it possible to change it to anything within a certain format?

It isn't the background on the head unit itself. That requires access to the hard drive which I don't have. I changed the boot up/shut down screen on the SD Nav card that uses the same Astrium back screen.

To Nhpatriot

Hey, was curious about your astrium. On the bubble on getting it. Does the FM radio have id tags? Does it show the artist name on FM? If you still have this unit...any regrets yet or should I go with stock 430n/730n? I have a 2015 Patriot with standard radio with uconnect. No touch screen. Want something fancier.:)
