Ive been through a very confusing issue with my Pat and im wondering if anyone has ran into this issue. Its kindof a long story so bare with me.
I first noticed the ABS, ESP/BAS, and Traction control light on at startup a few months ago. My code reader pulls no codes but looks like the picture:

When these 3 lights are showing there's also some other issues that go along with it but don't make sense to me. First thing is that the transmission doesn't work the same. So for example, if im going 40 mph the rpms is a little over 2k when the lights aren't showing the rpms are close to 1500 at the same speed. Also if I need to accelerate usually rpms go high then go down as if its like overdrive but if the lights are showing the rpms will stay high untill you let up on the pedal. It is almost like it cant reach the proper gear ratio. Autostick doesn't help either. I hope that makes sense to everyone.

Another problem is when I am slowing down to a stop and Im turning into a parking spot at the same time the brakes make a clicking sound I can feel through the pedal. Only when the lights are showing. When the 3 lights are not showing none of these problems exist.

So my Pat still has an aftermarket warranty I bought and I took it to the dealer and of course, the part needed was not covered and it would cost $1400. Which I dont have. So I looked around the forums for hours and found a thread talking about the possible corroded wires under the drivers side kickplate. I opened it up, cleaned it up, resoldered it and it made no difference to fix the issue. Also, cruise control works so its not the speed sensor.

So now that we have been getting cold weather where I am, the issue has been gone as if nothing happened. For almost 2 weeks the lights have not shown up and no other issues. Part of me sais great, its fixed no more worries, the other part of me is saying trade it in while the weather is cold. Since I owe 3 more years of payments, trading it in will screw me over. I owe more than what its worth.

Does anybody have any ideas, advice, experience on this issue? I would really appreciate it.

There is a three wire splice that corrodes and can cause this. It's located behind the drivers side kick panel plastic cover. Three red (I think) wires that are soldered together, then taped with water absorbing fabric tape (good job Jeep!). There was a very old post on here that had a photo of the exact wires and location if you do a search.

*DOH* I just realized you fixed those wires. Never mind!

My next thought would be a corroded or bad ground somewhere, but where to start looking I'm not sure.

Could possibly be one of the wheel speed sensors. Even with FWD there is an sensor on each hub. Should be able to get all 4 for around $100

5105063AD - Left Rear

lol Todde ive searched high and low but a bad ground somewhere would be a good place to look because its fine now that its cold out. I did also replace my battery thinking maybe its getting low voltage or a bad ground because my old battery was corroded badly. That did not fix the issue. Could it be a fuse going bad?

I think I read somewhere that the test to see if the wheel speed sensors are bad is to test cruise control. The cruise control worked fine when the lights were showing. Correct me if i'm wrong.
I think the dealer was going to replace the abs pump or something like that. What gets me is if its really gone bad it would be always bad not intermittent.

i know the feeling bub i have all three lights on and ive wasted about 400 dollars on getting it fixed
but no one seems to be able to figure out exactly whats wrong with it
the shop i went to said it was rotors and brakes got those changed and twenty minutes later the problem was still there
is this dangerous?
im hearing really loud noises when driving.. sounds like its in the rotation of the wheels and at the end of braking it makes a loud squek or creak noise.

Have a similar issue, how did yours resolve? I took mine to a local mechanic and he said the ABS module was dying. Any idea where to find it on a 2009 Patriot or how difficult it is to replace? Just got a bunch of issues resolved last year and I'm at it again.

Unlikely. The module either works or it doesn't. Go to someone with Snapon diagnostics and have the braking system read. 9 times out of 10 it's a wheel speed sensor or, less likely, the magnetic ring on a bearing

Can also be the metal clips that mount / locate sensors on hub

Hello all,

Wish just the sensors were bad on my Wife's Patriot.... rear sensors code read out were showing faults ... as I found out, the thin metal ring/holder for the sensors that are pressed on the rear of the hub and locate the sensors to the bearing surface to read wheel speeds had rusted away on both rear sides and allowed the plastic sensors to leave their locations and not read properly.

And of course, you can't buy just the new metal ring to hold the sensors in place, they come with new hubs and that is a lot more work to do, especially if things are rusted up as ours was.

But, sensors could have also been bad or both clips and sensors, ABS code reader only pointed me to problem area and could not know bad mounting ring from sensor failure it seems

Best,

Hey thebakers,

I'm sorry to hear you're having this concern with your vehicle. If you would like to send me your VIN and contact info in a PM, I'd be happy to look into this further for you.

ABS ESP/BAS light on and off for no apparent reason 2014 Jeep Patriot 42,000 miles

For 2 weeks now and of course just past warranty period my wife's 2014 Patriot started having the ABS ESP/BAS light on and off for no apparent reason. 2014 Jeep Patriot 42,000 miles. We live in the south and rust is usually not an issue here. Does this code have to be cleared once it is ever triggered? It was raining and came on the 1st time as my wife made a tight turn in our circle drive. I then drove it less than 300 feet and it went off. But every day since it stays on at times and goes off at times. It seems to drive the same no matter but it bothers us as this is our 6th new Chrysler product in 8 years and reading the many threads similar it looks like they have a problem here. Any ideas would be appreciated as to where to start.

It's one of the wheel speed sensors.

How does one reset the Error Code lights after replacing a sensor ?

All 3 of mine came on (41,000 Miles) while driving with cruise control on. Lights came on all at once, Cruise control turned off. A mechanic told me to clean the sensors. I did, no help. I replaced the Front Right sensor. No help. I kinda lost interest, thought I'd take it to the dealer to fix it.

I’m having a similar problem with my 2010 Patriot. No one is able to tell me what’s wrong with it. I had my bearings and rotors fixed a little over a year ago and now this problem. If anyone knows anything, please let me know.

I'm nut sure what 'similar' means, but if you're having the ABS & ESC lights coming on, my first guess would be a bad wheel sensor. I doubt its related to anything you had done a year ago.

There really is a three wire splice that can cause all three lights to come on. You have to remove the interior drivers side plastic kick panel and the interior plastic trim over the rocker. Look in the area of the rocker where it meets the kick panel. There was a very old message where a gentleman took pictures of it, the corrosion it gets and his repair, but if you start looking through the harness in that area, you will find the only three wire splice, taped up.

I just inherited a 2011 Jeep Patriot from my father in law, who passed away. No one knows anything about the car history. It has only 50k miles. Twice the ABS warning came on and the car slide a little. The light went off but has now stayed on. Drives fine. But of course I'm worried about the brakes. Jeep dealership service at first say it was a wheel speed sensor (~$400 to repair). We agreed to the repair and then were told the car was done. Two days later I finally have a chance to head out there and call on my way. Guy says they don't know that that was the problem and now think the serpentine belt needs replacing and has damaged the wiring in the front of the car, wiring that is earlier in the process of the speed sensors. ~$900 repair b/c wiring in difficult place (mostly labor cost).

I honestly don't know what to think. Any ideas? I have no experience with this dealership's service dept b/c never owned a Jeep.
