Advice on hood.

Hey ,

in probably 2016 or 2017 my hood started slightly eroding off. I think the dealership sold me a wrecked vehicle and it was re painted and its chipping off. regardless Ive had it since 2015.

what is the most hassle free inexpensive way to fix this hood? get a shop to sand it down and repaint it, which would cost 500$?

I've seen some 2007-2017 Patriot hoods sold online and they looked like they cost 200$. Im wondering if anyone knows a better option.

I want patriot to last, hopefully another 2-3 years, so right now my budget for fixing this is 500$.

If you take it in for a repaint, it will probably never match the rest of the paint exactly. I would try your a salvage yards and look for one the same color.

Aaugh! That hood looks awful. I can see why you want it repainted.

I had to repaint the windshield frame on my Wrangler a number of years ago. I removed it and gave it to a reputable shop to repaint. They had it for about a month until another customer came in with the same paint, and they did mine at the same time. It was a lot cheaper than having them make paint just for my little job. Maybe you can work with a shop. Give them the paint code and have them call you when they get someone else that needs the same paint. Since body work is never an in & out thing, they could probably give you a couple days notice so you'd have time to arrange an alternate vehicle.

John, you should be looking for a tag that looks like the one below. PX8 is a common black paint code for Patriots, but you need to confirm it.

Looks like the clear coat is practically gone. Not much you can really do. Even cleaning, sanding, Bondo, repaint, and re-coat with clear coat will likely cause it to still rust from the inside and cause problems in the next few years again.

Perhaps you can find a decent hood at the scrap yard for cheap. There should be a ton of Patriots there if it's anything like where I live.

I dont see rust. Ill look into it though.

so do you think I should ask the bodyshop guy what he thinks, and ultimately just cancel my appointment and just look for a hood?

Even though its not breaking the bank, I am on a budget and dont want to pay for a sand down and repainted hood and a year from now have it start eroding again.

Most body shops in my area guarantee the paint job for life.

The rust comment is totally dependent on where you live (rust belt vs. the sunny south).

You might get lucky and find an excellent black hood in a salvage yard. Have you contacted a local one to see what they can locate? Then, compare the refinish route vs. the replacement one (parts & labor). I would tend to want to see a used hood before purchase. I've seen hoods as cheap as $250 off a collision totaled Patriot, but shipping might kill the deal.

You can do a salvage part search yourself (your zip code): https://www.google.com/search?client...+patriot+parts ...some sites are year specific, others are not. It seems all hoods are the same, '07-'17 for our Pats.

okay ill ask if Bodywerks guarantees a paint job for life. Thank you for that.

I have not contacted a savage yard. The shop thats doing the work, said something about getting a rear bumper maybe at a savage yard , so ill ask about a hood and if thats better/less expensive ill ask him if he can do that.
