Look to purchase Jeep Patriot

I’m looking to purchase a Patriot and I am wondering from current owners what are some of the pros and cons to the patriot?

Welcome! I've had two Patriots with at total of 400,000 miles on them.

  • Great fuel economy.
  • Good cargo space.
  • Comfortable ride.
  • Very few repairs.
  • Durable engine.
  • Excellent traction, even FWD is great in the snow.

  • Early years had water leaks, mostly due to clogged drains from the sunroof.
  • Plugs are only good for 30,000. Plugs are an easy DIY, however.
  • Some (not me) complain of premature front end problems.
  • Check the subframe for rust. Some had enough rust to lead to structural failure. There was an extended warranty for the original owner, but if you're buying used, you won't be covered. Mine was solid after 10 New England winters. From what I've seen on this site the repair seems to run c$1200 -- expensive but not prohibitive.
  • Depending on what year, if you get the CVT transmission, the fluid should be changed at 50-60,000 miles. The owners manual says 120,000 and that is too long. So beware people trying to dump Patriots with failing trannies. If you get one with under 80,000 miles just get the fluid changed to be on the safe side. Don't take the previous owner's word for it.

Also many complain about a lack of features, lack of power, lack of comfort, excess road noise, etc. But a $20,000 4x4, especially that bears the Jeep name, cannot and should not be expected to have every single unnecessary new gizmo, a Hellcat V8, the ride of a Cadillac, or the quietness of such luxury cars. It's a Jeep, rather zippy for it's size and weight if you get the 2.4L(most did, and 4x4 isn't available without it), isn't whisper-quiet but gives you an idea of your speed, and has what you need in a vehicle....extras are truly optional here.

Trekkie, trucker, Jeeper, potential racer. Don't touch my trumpets.
