Powertrain Control Module

2008 Jeep Patriot here, automatic tranny, 4wd, 2.4 liter, owned by my 60+ year old disabled brother 1000 miles away. The dealer service department has had the Jeep since Feb 5, 2019. My brother has Down Syndrome, with a severe speech impediment that makes phone communications impossible for anyone who does not know his speech disability. He is unusually short with thick glasses. One can pick him out of a crowd. He lives on $771 per month disability income. Today my brother let me call the dealer service department on his behalf. The dealer staff said that the Jeep needs a new Powertrain Control Module. The staff said the first one the service department staff installed was defective. The staff said the part had been on back order. By coincidence in my opinion, the staff said a new PCM is arriving today. The staff said the bill to date is $2100. I work on my own Toyotas and Hondas and think I know my way around the net for parts. I see that a new PCM for the 2.4 Liter engine would run around $600, per factorychryslerparts.com . Part number is RL150523AA? The dealer gave my brother a loaner car for at least part of the last few months, supposedly at no additional charge.

Can people here see the hours of diagnosis adding up to over, say, $1200?

Is it usual for the PCM to be on back order for this long?

All suggestions welcome. Thank you for offering your thoughts.

Hi Elle,

No experience with having a PCM replaced so I'm not going to be much help, but I've seen people here post about dealers asking $1200 or so to do it. Haven't heard of them being on back order before but I suppose it's possible

$2100 seems high to me. I would have thought the first PCM would have been covered by some kind of warranty.

Another member here purchased a pre-programmed PCM from Flagship for around $160: https://www.jeeppatriot.com/forum/1811985-post7.html

Here's the link for the 2008 Patriot PCM:https://www.fs1inc.com/2008-jeep-pat...rogrammed.html

Due to the circumstances of the situation, you might also reach out to JeepCares via PM and see if there's anything they can do to help.

Chrysler is pretty well known from where I live as group of dealerships who inflate their prices like crazy. Seriously $130 CAD for an oil change on a patriot? It's less than 5L. My Honda was $36 to do.

From what I've seen, the computer shouldnt be that expensive. And from what my service manual shows for troubleshooting to determine if the pcm is at fault certainly should come anywhere close to 10hrs. So to me, the price quoted seems way over what it should be.

Ask for a cost breakdown to find out the specific details. Might give us more of an idea as to why the price is high.

Thank you, Sandstone and LouOfTheJeep. The links and your experiences help a lot. I will pursue a price breakdown.

Yesterday my brother told me the dealer had told him the part would arrive, 'in a few days' several times This of course never turned out to be true. I then tried reaching member JeepCares, but her PM box was full. (I am sure this will change. She seems terrific and like the real deal.) Instead, I spoke on the phone to Jeep customer service per the phone number at web site http yada fcacommunity.force.com/Jeep/s/article/How-do-I-contact-Jeep2. Jeep customer service started a case number and said they would expedite the part getting to the dealer. On the phone at least, the Jeep/Mopar staffer took down a lot of information and seemed great. At this point, I think it's a mix of (a) the difficulties of a business working with someone unable to communicate effectively and who is also impoverished and (b) possible gouging. I will update the thread as developments occur.

Hi Elle,
I apologize for our inbox being full. I have created some additional space. It seems as though you were able to get a case created with the team we would usually escalate to. If you have any troubles getting in contact with your case manager or need any additional assistance, please send our team a private message and we would be happy to look into this!

Thank you for explaining, JeepCares. It's no problem at all about the inbox.

Update: My disabled brother phoned me to say he received his Jeep Patriot back today. He says it is running fine. He has a bill for $2100. I will pursue a breakdown of this bill soon.

Many thanks to Jeep headquarters' customer service staff. Without their intervention, I do not think my brother would have his Jeep back.

My disabled brother's Jeep broke down a few days after he got it back, I believe around May 13. The dealer claims it is the computer again. The dealer again gave my brother a loaner car. Supposedly the dealer will return the Jeep on Wednesday. My brother said he will confirm if it is back on Wednesday. If it is not back on Wednesday, he agreed to let me call the dealer and again elevate the issue to headquarters-customer care as needed. Just saying, for now.

That price again seems really high for the work involved. Especially considering it isn't a lot of work to change the pcm. Most of the work would be in troubleshooting, but the manual's procedure and estimates from various sites online:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...Gr21krnlnpdpB_

Show cost and labour well below that price. I listed one example above but you can research more. There should be some sort of warranty on their work. Obviously if it's broken down again and they claim it is the same part than they should be repairing it again for free. After 3 times I would request a refund and have the vehicle towed to another garage.

I would also check if there is a problem with the positive battery cable or voltage regulator which could cause damage to the pcm as it is a voltage sensitive part.

Lou, thank you for the detailed response. The repairpal link is great. Given that PCMs do not fail very often, and as you suggest, at the moment I hypothesize that the dealer has not nailed the problem. Hence the comebacks (the bane of a service manager's existence, especially when a customer has paid big bucks already?). I am pondering how to proceed and solutions. Probably the first step is to get the Jeep running well, then sell it. My brother is agreeable to having a more reliable car, like an import.

My old Honda civic never had a problem. Also, Toyota's are reliable.

If you want to know the price. Pretty sure the PCM is right on top of the engine so uninstalling and reinstalling shouldn't take long. Most of the cost would be in diagnosis. Like I said before though, the manual outlines what to do and it doesn't take that long.
