Hunting/shooting

I've seen people refer to shooting, or hunting, in a couple posts, so wondering who else here is a hunter, or sport shooter?

Very cool. I love bird hunting, and I hunt with and train English Pointers. About the only wild game bird here anymore is the Ruffed Grouse. We get pheasants, but only the ones that are stocked, or at game farms. I also hunt some Chukars when at those places too. I hunt ducks and geese when I can. I shoot sporting clays in the summer to help keep my skills up.

I also am a pistol and personal protection instructor.

And I hunt deer with a bow and sometimes a gun too. And I hunt turkeys in the spring, and sometimes fall seasons.

I also love to fly fish for trout when I can, and other fishing as well.

Looking forward to seeing who else here is into these things.

Where in PA? I know a lot of guys from NY hunt near where I live in Potter county. Wel, or they used to when we had more deer. A couple years ago they combined the antlered and antlerless seasons, and a lot of deer were taken. I thinki that was the plan though, to reduce the overall herd, and they sure did that. I used to see 40-60 deer at night in my field, now maybe 10-12.

That is funny. I don't think anyone in the US considers Crows or Pigeons "game birds". Could be a Queen's English vs. US English translation though. Game birds in the US tend to be Geese, Pheasants and Ducks.

Carbon county,
have a place 2 hrs from NYC,
hunt the game lands there,
Like PA Hunting for its convenience, but dont like the no sunday hunting rule,
Also have a place on 48 acres in upstate NY, 6 hrs from NYC,
Much better hunting, but 6 hr drive makes it tough for short weekends

I've been known to go out time to time. Love to hunt any of the upland game birds, waterfowl, and deer once in a while. My avtar picture shows my bird dogs.

dixiedawg, thanks for the recipie and I didn't know you were Personal Protection Instructor. Trade ya some sporting clays tips for some PP tips.
The Jeff Cooper Quote did make me suspect you were into that thought. His stuff is very informative. Just picked up my new CC peice.

I'll be heading to So. Dakota the end of the month.

Ahh I feel a Patriot get together in South Dakota, or somewhere coming up one day.

I use pigeons for dog training, and I sometimes hunt crows on Sundays, which is abpout the only Sunday hunting we can do. Crows with a shotgun is fun. I shoot some crows when groundhog hunting too, at long range with a 22-250. Looks like a cloud of black feathers when hit.

If you really want some good PP training, I would reccomend Front Sight near Las Vegas. They used to have a great 4 day course where you also got a brand new Springfield XD pistol as part of it. If you sign up on their web site for the newsletters, they will send you discounts etc. as they occur. They are running some great specials now for folks who participated in the march on DC or any other of the tea parties.

That sounds like a great way for me to spend a Vegas vacation that the wife wants to go on.
A patriot get together hunt sounds ideal. That 22-250 at crows made me think of the late Herb Parsons(Exhibition shooter for Winchester) and one of his shots. Black cloud of feathers for sure!

What i meant was game birds ( pheasant, partridge etc) as well as pigeons and crows. sorry for the misunderstanding. i also have two black lab gundogs which only just fit in the back of the pat.

I just got back from a gopher hunt. Mainly do varmint hunting nowadays. We have horses and tend to watch the holes quite closely. Yep, hunted and fished most all my life.

Kansas is gaining a rep. for deer hunting, and I can tell you it's true.

That is the rumor and by some of the deer I've seen pics of it's true. I hear they aren't too Non resident friendly with the deer permits though. Or has that changed? I have only pheasant hunted there.

Hunt Grouse, Whitetails and pesky varmints here. Also seem to do more ice fishing than open water fishing, guess I have more time in the winter. When I get the chance I like to go to Montana for some Elk hunting.
