Cooper CS4 Touring / Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR

I am really getting disgusted at the complete and utter lack of quality tires available for the Patriot in the OE 17" sizes. It just plane sucks trying to get tires for this vehicle.

About the only really good tire out there if you want anything but a run of the mill passenger car all season tire is the Yokohama Geolander AT/S in the P215/60R17 size. Those are pretty expensive( $700+ a set M&B )and also hard to come by. Tried today to find some and they are on National back order for the next 8-12 weeks AT LEAST according to Yokohama. I could order some from Tirerack but at $650 just for the tires it is too much $$$ I think right now and I really don't want AT's if I can avoid it.

I also looked at the new tire offerings( Firestone Precision Touring and Dunlop Signature II ) I posted about recently and was totally turned off by the tires in person. The real thing doesn't match up to the photos in the Patriot 17" sizes. Hankook Optimo H727's are good tires and I will recommend them in a second for cars and suv's/cuv's that are just daily drivers but I question them being the right choice for me based on my towing needs in the winter???

I am pretty much down to looking at the Cooper CS4 Touring tires and the similar Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR. Tread is slightly different but otherwise the tires are pretty much the same. Thought I had a deal on the Mastercraft's today until the tire store tried to rip me off on the price match total deal so I walked out.

I can get some CS4's for $500 shipped from DTD, and the Mastercrafts for $475 from another source, and my dealer will mount them for free but I am concerned about them in the snow. I just don't know if they are all that great in the bad weather? My Firestone Affinity's are ok in dry weather but it is when the snow is falling and I am towing my boat that they fail( weight of boat pushing the vehicle from behind causes them to lose traction on downhill grades ). I need something better but as most of you know there isn't much to choose from.

I have read posts from people on here that they have the CS4's and I am curious as to your opinions on them. Especially in snow and ice. Also am curious if anyone has used the Mastercraft Avenger Touring LSR's as well and what you think of them? I appreciate it.

BTW - here are the spec's and photos of the Cooper and Mastercrafts( made by Cooper )for P215/65R17( I am not sure yet if I will upsize or stay with the P215/60R17 but... ). Not 100% the same but similar( especially in person vs the photos ).

I've tried the Cooper CS4 touring on another vehicle and was very smooth, quiet, and I like the tread pattern. I will consider them when it comes time to replace my oem Firestones.

I mentioned on another thread that I had a set of Cooper CS4 Touring tires and I had no complaints with them at all but when they wore out (they lasted twice as long as the SRA's) I bought the Hankook Optimo H727's probably based solely because of the recommendations here on this forum. To be very honest I bought the winter Michelins because I was terrified of the way the SRA's handled on ice and I figure as long as the winter tires are on the Patriot I'm not getting any wearout on the All Seasons sitting in my garden shed. I took the Coopers and the Hankooks off before the first snowflake hit the ground so I cannot tell you how either would be on ice. If I only drove in Alberta I would probably use All Seasons year around however with downhill skiing in Montana and trips to Idaho I'm gonna be safe instead of sorry. I'm now on my 5th winter for the XIce-XI2 and they are down close to the snow wear bars but the tire shop said they are OK for the rest of this season. I thought about Bridgestone Blizzak WS70s and I believe they would only last for half the mileage I got out of the Michelin XIce-XI2. I thought about the Yokohama Geolander AT/S in 225/65/17 and decided against them for many reasons. I think they would be rougher riding than the All Season Touring tires and be more prone to cupping and Not last as long. The 215/65/17 tire exactly fits my spare wheel well and my cable chains fit these tires with no rubbing and my speedometer is dead on. We have Michelin LTX M+S tires on our Cherokee but a year ago my wife found them to be very treacherous on ice so we got studded Hercules Avalanche tires for winter on the Cherokee. Maybe there is an aggressive tire that is also safe on ice but I haven't found one yet. I believe the hype that real winter tires are better because they get soft when the temperature drops. I have not tried the Nokians with the mountain snowflake so that might be an option.

Ignatz has a spectacular aura about
The only Mastercraft tires I ever had were the MC-440s on the MIL's Saturn. They're acceptable -- traction is good on dry or wet, but its definitely not a snow tire. Seem to be wearing down pretty fast. In retrospect I wish I shopped rather than taking the deal the body shop offered (it got rear-ended and was in the shop at inspection time). I really wish I'd gotten Michelins or Generals.
