Clutch Problems on New Patriot

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone else has suffered with Clutch problems on recent Patriot purchases.
I purchased a new 2.2 Diesel manual Limited in December 2010 and already has been in the garage twice - first time for a new clutch unit after total failure of clutch while driving. Apparently down to Clutch Plates. Second time and still in the garage now following further clutch problems they are going to replace Fly wheel Clutch Kit and Clutch Slave Cylinder following advice from Chrysler Technical Visit. Thankfully this is all under warranty.
Now of course I have been advised that this isn't a common problem - but having read other threads in the forum all be it on some older models i'm not so sure.
So would be interested if my Jeep is indeed "Unlucky" or whether this is more common than is being let on.

BTW - Found the forum soon after purchase as I couldn't figure out why my Dash compass was flashing CAL - found a thread with the answer :)

I Cant quite remember where I read it , but the general Gist was that Jeep were disappointed with the new 2.2 -6 speed set up . Although more power & torque are available , the whole system did not seem as robust as the previous 2.0 VW CRD-6 speed. Certain components in the engine / gearbox are prone to early ware/breakage.
Perhaps a lot more testing / reseach should have been done!!

I think I read it on allpar.com--I've had a good poke around but havnt yet manage to locate it.......I'll keep checking.

I'm a bit late into this thread but my Jeep Patriot has just hit 60,000 miles and clutch has just gone!
Not only that though, 2 weeks before my jeeps 1st MOT (Oct last year) I lost control of the jeep and went crashing into a bollard, leaving a lot of damage.

Then when it went in for MOT it was found that the track-rod ends had completly gone.

So a Jeep that is a little over 3 years old has cost me:
£370 for track-rod ends
£900 to fix damage to the car
And a further £1200 to get the clutch replaced.

My other half also has a jeep Patriot, this too failed on it's first MOT with ball joints and track-rod end.

Now I'm just waiting for his clutch to go too (he has done 50,000 miles.

I'm so fed up as I love my Jeep but don't trust it anymore?

Because of CRD Clutch / Gearbox on Uk /Euro Pat taking extra power & torque, this post doesnt really apply to USA or 2.4 gas /petrol models.

I bought my 2010 Patriot 2.4 Sport Plus 5dr (manual) last November 2010. The clutch went two days ago and it is still at the garage - they say the clutch unit and gear box will need to be replaced. The car only has 6300 miles recorded!!! I love the look of my patriot but I may be regretting replacing my 5 year old audi (5 years of trouble free motoring) for an unreliable jeep.

I have a 2011 and my clutch failed at 9000 miles. Never seen a clutch fail so fast. We have a 84 ram 350 prospector 4 speed and i think it still has the original clutch...

When I'm in cali there is a lot of stop and go. When I'm in AZ its mostly long hwy cruises with a mixture of sandy hills and slopes when I visit my parents. Dealer said it just failed, probably defective. It happened on a long AZ cruise.

I live in Guiseley Leeds and do a short commute to work in a place called Ilkley so most journeys are short but the gear box should not have gone so quickly. The dealer sent it was a defective part but reading through a lot of forums it does seem to occur a lot with fellow jeep patriot owners!

That sucks man, I had a 2007 compass at 75k it needed all new ball joints in the front and you have to replace the whole control arm for those which is dumb in my opinion. I had a 2011 pat for a bit then the rear control arm bent when I took it off road. It was a fun city jeep but I couldnt trust it anymore either, so I sold it back to the dealer I bought it from.

hey guys

just had the clutch go on my 2011 jeep patriot .. id done around 7000km so still haven't had my first proper service. its been towed off and will hear from the dealer this week but ill be extremely unhappy should they not cover this under my extended warranty. ive been off road maybe twice since ive owned it but not enough to justify such an early break.

will let you know how it goes :(

I bought my 2010 2.0 limited crd, new from Jeep, 1st clutch went at 22k miles, warranty only 12k on clutch. Jeep charged me £1700 for a replacement, it's now done 40k and guess what! Clutch slipping again..... No warranty and £1700 bill again, thanks jeep! It appears they've lifted a engine and transmission from an Audi putting it into the jeep not catering for the extra weight of the bodywork and it's ripping the clutches to pieces. I used to drive 50 k plus a year and never had a clutch go before, I've been getting around 45mpg with the jeep and still on original tyres so you can see its not being thrashed. Just a weak point on the car. I also have a problem when the temp gets below -2 and the doors are deadlocked, I cant get in the drivers door! Don't know if it's just mine or common? Good luck getting it sorted, hope you have better luck than me!

wrong assumption.
there is no extra weight that would tear a clutch appart.
the weight difference between a patriot crd and a audi a4 wagon is 35kg!
it's the crappy chrysler parts quality.
i changed my clutch exactly a year ago after playing in high snow.my fault basically, but i did it in the past with other vehicles and it didn't nappen.
when the mechanic took it appart he said he had never seen such a low quality disc.
i replaced the whole kit, even the flywheel, with a sachs replacement for vw audi.
from the moment i took it back it was a different vehicle, with the clutch pedal softer than new and with smoother shifting.
so,trust,me it's the oem quality.
anyway,i was told by my dealer (when i was doing maintainence there while still under warranty),that the 2.2 crd has a faulty clutch, many having this problem.

Hi, my crd is having a new clutch fitted as i type this, mine went at 42000 miles.Iam having an aftermarket clutch fitted as i dont want a chrysler part put back on because i dont think they are up to the job, its costing £780 at a clutch specialist so i hope iam doing the right thing! anyway i will be back on here when i get it back to let everyone know what its like. Now that my warranty is gone i wouldn't use a jeep dealership unless i had no other option.

#27 ·
what brand did they fit?
did you go aftermarket or oem?

#24 ·
WELL THE FIRST THING THAT COMES TO MIND... THEY DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE A CLUTCH AND THAT IS ONE REASON THAT IT IS FOR SALE...SECOND.. MOST CLUTCHES I HAVE HAD LAST ABOUT 80K OR MORE... SO AT 6000...WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT PIC.. LEARNING TO DRIVE ONE...WILL DESTROY IT IN LESS THAN 10K...UNLESS YOU FIGURE IT OUT

It's really strange actually, the clutch they took out had SACHS stamped on to it and also the chrysler logo, the fact it had the chrysler logo on says to me that it was the original ,unless SACHS stamp on the make of vehicle each clutch is intended for but i've never known this on other parts in the past?. I had already requested a SACHS clutch kit so thats what i got fitted, it had a bit of a judder to begin with (i was told it would have to bed in to the flywheel) but now its almost gone so fingers crossed it will be ok.

I have a 2007 Patriot Sport that will be having its 2nd clutch replaced in this week. The first time it went out it was alittle less then 12000 miles. AT least on this one I got over 60k miles! I'm not a clutch rider and I definitely do not do any off roading or abnormal conditions driving. Between this and some other issues I have had I just can't bring myself to recommend the Patriot to anyone. Its been so disappointing over the past 6 years.

With only 18,222 miles on my Jeep Patriot Sport Plus (2010) my clutch and gear box fails January 2013. It is mended under warranty and now a year and 2 months later my gearbox has failed again with only 28,000 on the clock!!! Chrysler has said it will be £4500 to mend and are offering £1500 pounds and asking me to find the £3000 difference, I have had numerous cars and not one has had gear box/clutch fail. I am in the process of emailing Chrysler about this and refusing to pay the difference, I just want to get rid of this patriot!!

Sorry to hear about all the premature clutch failures, I'd hope Jeep would stand behind these better then they are. For what it's worth I had 108,000 miles on mine when I had the transmission replaced which was thankfully covered under my lifetime warranty. The clutch was still working fine but I went ahead and had them change it while they had the transmission out assuming it's days were numbered. I'm hard on my Patriot which is why I bought the warranty. It's 122,000 miles have all came by being driven over a mountain to and from work daily. I use the transmission to slow down while going down an icy mountain which is much safer then braking but I assume that had a lot to do with the transmission bearings going out at 108k. So far I'm happy with the quality of the Patriot considering what it goes through and what I paid for it.

Me too, and Chrysler thinks it's fine, thumbs nose at me

I liked my 2014 Patriot and I got a good deal on it. Sadly, I now know why. I've driven standards all my life and the only clutch I ever replaced was my Ram 2500 at 140K (I towed lots of heavy stuff, so it was understandable). Now my Jeep needs a new clutch at 32,800 and Chrysler is just saying ... sucks to be you man (OK, I'm paraphrasing). They know it was a lemon, they know they are at fault, they know they don't have to do anything ... all they lose is a life-long Chrysler customer becoming a life-long warning people about Chrysler.

I also have a 2014 Jeep Patriot and my clutch went out last weekend, at only 30,000 miles. Curious as to whether you ever got anywhere with Chrysler?

I've never really had a clutch fail on my 2010 but I have gone through 2 transmissions and changed the clutch each time since the labor was free.
My first transmission failed at 105,000 miles but my clutch still had some life in it. I currently have about 15,000 on my latest transmission and clutch.
From my experience the manual transmissions suck but I've had no complaints on the clutch.

I've been driving manuals for over 50 years and never had the problems like you've experienced. You must be extremely persistent and vehicle loyal to tolerate this and try to remedy these failures after so many occurrences. I would have traded the vehicle after the second instance.
