Knock on reversing and squeal from rear

Having repaired the knocking front end wiith new bushes and end links, found out that the exhaust heatshield had fallen off and the spare wheel well was full of enough water leaked through the rear brake light to solve droughts in Africa, we have found another problem.... Well two actually that may have he same origin...

1./ on startup we need to reverse out of the drive, as we reverse there is a loud clunk/thunk noise coming from the rear passenger side (which would be drivers side for most of you). It makes the noise once, and not again. But each time we park up and need to reverse out it makes the same noise.

2./ from the rear left again, there is a loud intermittent squeal that remains once commenced whether we brake or increase / decrease speed but is louder and more frequent over rough roads. I removed the rear shelf, rear floor cover, spare wheel etc and any loose trim to see if it was an interior issue but the noise remains.

As the noise is coming from the same location, I assume they come from the same source. Would these noises be symptoms of worn sway bar bushes/links? Or could they be something else?

Thanks for any help. The Jeep is a 2.0 CRD 6 speed manual UK 2008 model with 39k miles.

dixiedawg is just really nice
Squeal sounds like maybe a wheel bearing, but not sure about the thump.

I would have thought a wheel bearing would be more of a droning noise rather than a squeak ?This sounds like the wheel on a rusty bike turning.

chethro will become famous soon enough
Could the brake be hanging up and you notice it more when you back up as opposed to going forward??

Do you mean that the brake might be sticking?

1. No clue, sorry friend.

2. Could it perhaps be your brakes that need servicing? I've had bad break pads/rotors wail all sorts of nasty squealing and grinding noises with my Wrangler.

As others have said, it might be worth having a look at your brakes. I recently changed the pads and found that the rear near side pads were not releasing properly (no noise though).

It's a single piston design as used on the Mitsubishi Shogun, Outlander and countless other cars. The pads sit in a spring steel guide which gets gunked up.

While you're at it, adjust and balance the handbrake by removing the rubber grommets and using a screw driver on the adjuster wheel. You need both back wheels off the ground to check each brake is equally taking the strain. My Patriot had been dealer serviced previously and were way off.

Even if this is not you're problem, it'll give you a chance to check this area for wear in bearings, links etc.

Good luck.

99% likely

if you leave it without the handbrake on, then reverse, does it make the thump?

The brake pads and discs were replaced all round when we bought it last year...... So I guess there is a good chance the dealer messed it up!

Once the snow clears I will check out the rear brakes, what with all the other problems I am wondering what will be next love the jeep but never had this many faults on a vehicle.

Thanks or the suggestions folks!

Also pay attention to what types of breaks a service center will put on your vehicle. If you live in areas of high elevation or areas where you use a lot of brake, it's important to get the BEST brakes you can. Crap brake pads or rotors tend to go a lot faster, I learned that as a young man. (wait im still a young man) But yeah, def could be your brakes bro.
