IIHF Champs....USA!!!
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that the US Jr hockey team has won gold this morning against the Swedes in the World Jr Hockey tournament final winning 3-1.
Being Canadian its an annual treat for us during the Christmas holidays to watch our boys compete against the worlds best Jr players. It was extremely disappointing finishing 4th with the NHL on strike and some of our Jr NHL'ers on the team. It just goes to show you how strong this field is as the last 4 years has resulted in 4 different winners. The US went from finishing 7th last year in Alberta to taking it all this year. Looks like having Phil Housely behind the bench paid off in spades not to mention solid goal tending and defense!! Future NHL'ers in the making here folks!!! Give your boys the accolades they deserve. Job well done!!

I actually set my alarm, got up and watched the game(s) live.
It is no longer "our" tournament, eh? It has taken years and years but the Swedes, USA, more have elevated their hockey programs to the point it is very competitive. for the non hockey watching USA members...Canada has medaled in each of the last 14 years of this tournament. Mostly golds...to have your team come through the hardest side of prelims and end up prevailing for gold is a true testament to them. USA beat Sweden (who won the gold last year) and Russia beat Canada in overtime. Close, good hockey. Refs still suck tho, right?

I think we have been spoiled with NHL refereeing that anyone else will always seem bush league. And if I'm not mistaken Canada did score 4 PP goals against the Russians today did they not?
For Canada its gold or nothing and playing for the bronze just seems like a waste of time. Against the Russians and Americans it was evident that our defense wasn't good enough. I can't tell you how many defensive giveaways I saw in these last 2 games. I don't know whats happened to our Jrs in the last few years but they are starting to look sub par in terms of overall team talent. Its also very evident that other nations have looked at our past successes and learned and improved their play. Hockey Canada had better take another look at their "Program of Excellence" as its clearly not as successful as it once was.

It is a sport watched by freedom loving people in many countries in the world.
 It is both a professional sport with leagues around the world and many amateur leagues. additionally, hockey is played for fun in back yard and local recreational areas in wintertime.  If you have further questions, feel free to ask.

I am of the opinion that we would have done better without the jr nhlers. Fewer rough play penalties for starters.

Was great to see the US win Gold. The Goalie is a local kid, I've seen him play many, many times over the years. And, well, he was never that good, great he has improved that much.
There were several other local guys playing for the US too. It's wonderful how much the local hockey scene has improved around here.
