Shallows Vs Regular Subs

So I currently have a pair of MTX Thunders 5500 taking up my entire trunk. Im only running 600 watt 450 rms alpine amp (does no justice to my subs) but am looking to "downgrade" to shallows. Does anyone have the aftermarket shallow subs in there riot. Just looking to get some info on how the sound quality , "loudness", and just some general thoughts on the shallows <- or a different idea

Huh! Couldn't hear ya. I have hearing loss and ringing in the ears.

Quote:
Huh? Can you speak up? Oh! You want to know if loud music can hurt your ears. Are you asking because you like to put on your headphones and crank up the volume of your favorite CD? Maybe your mom or dad has told you, "Turn that down before you go deaf!" Well, they have a point. Loud noise (from music or other sources such as machinery or jet engines) can cause both temporary and permanent hearing loss.

Hearing loss means someone can't hear as well as other people do. For some people, that means not being able to hear at all.

If the noise around you is so loud that you have to shout to be heard, there is a chance that the mechanism inside your ear can be injured. Temporary hearing loss can happen after you've been exposed to loud noise for any duration. If you have temporary hearing loss, you won't be able to hear as well as you normally do for a while.

You also could have tinnitus (say: tih-neye-tus), which is a medical term for ringing in the ears. Your ears can feel "full," too. Although your hearing frequently returns to normal, the dangerous part is that you can lose it permanently if you listen to loud noise or music over and over again.

If someone is exposed to loud noise over a long period of time, like every day, permanent hearing loss can occur. This means the person's hearing won't ever be as good as it once was. That's why construction workers and factory workers need to wear ear protection. Lawn mowers and power tools, like chainsaws, also can be loud enough to affect someone's ability to hear high-pitched noises. This kind of noise also can cause a person to have tinnitus all the time.

Listening to loud music a lot can cause the same kind of damage, especially if headphones are used. Some famous musicians have suffered hearing loss and developed tinnitus — a real problem for someone who needs to hear to make and enjoy music. That's why now you might notice that some of your favorite musicians wear hearing protection while they're playing.

Just some advice from someone who has hearing loss and ringing in the ears. Take it or leave it, after all it's your hearing, not mine.

I second that Dixiedawg.

I am only 32 and have ringing and hearing loss already. From years of playing guitar and music too loud, attending stock car races, airshows etc. without protection.

Shallow mounts are usually different (other than the obvious) in that the motor of the woofer is smaller, the voice coil must be smaller/shorter. This is why most shallow mounts don't have a ton of thermal power handling. The baskets also restrict excursion. Low frequency response is knocked down in place of convenient mounting options. Just not the greatest route for sound quality or pressure level

I wish my hearing was from any of the above mentioned. Ear infections have reduced my hearing by 30% . So if the wife seems like she is yelling its because she is due to the tv volume way up. Not complaining it works in my favor lol.

Makes sense to me.

To the OP:

I wanted to go with a shallow mount also....Then I decided to get a 12 inch and build a sub box space in the spare tire area. Downside is that I have not done that yet I have just not had time or money for all the materials. I want to make it realllly nice.

Try the shallow mount. There are so many options now.

I saw Pioneer's Shallow mount 10" sub on crutchfield. They say it can reach 20Hz which is great. It's hard to find a sub that can do that. I would like to say you could stick them under the driver seats, but I don't think the jeeps have 5 7/8" of space under the seat. Unless you're 5'7" me and have the seat jacked all the way up just to see out.

If my Patriot was my own, I'd buy one and give it a shot. I already changed the front speakers because I was about to tear my ears off.

If you want to stick with the main-stream stuff, I'd check into those Alpine Type-R Shallows. Almost anybody that's really into mobile audio has owned/heard a Type-R. They get loud and sound pretty decent on a budget. I've beat the living hell out of pair of Type-R's. They'll take quite a bit power for only being a 2.5" coil.

The Alpine Type-R are the best on the market right now, anyone looking to get shallows this is the route to go. I was just down at my local audio shop checking them out. I decided to just stick with my MTX thunders due to the fact there really is no good place to mount shallows to regain space. The guy at the shop was showing me custom boxes for along the wells in the back which were very nice. It squared out the trunk and still gives you a boom
