I love to hike and I want to do some 14ers, one of the primary reasons i bought a pat was my ford escort wouldn't get to the trail heads. It got stuck on the road to greys peak :( I want to do camping and have fun in colorado. I've lived in colorado all my life and I enjoy every second of it. I haven't ever been offroading before but this summer I want to test what the pat can do. I know I just have fd1 but it should still be able to do something. also the 2011 fd1 has an extra inch of height than the 2010 and earlier. It looks like it has the same suspension that the frd2 has. It also has a bit more ground clearance than last years, but it is still missing the hooks or skid plates and just has some all season tires.

Unfortunately, Dude is now stationed in Idaho and has a Wrangler Sahara to play with, BSCB has a Lifted and Loaded Wrangler to play with, I have my Raider that's being built, and Robert... well... Robert has a beautiful baby girl. I am hoping to have time to hit the trails this year, especially with the Raider having it's new Diesel swap, and none of us are hard-core off-roaders, so we will likely be inclined to show you around.

    Tell us more about yourself...

    ColoradoMan,

I see in your profile that you have a 4x4 Latitude 5sp, I assume with no FDII upgrades (skids, hooks, etc). If that's the case, I would caution you taking it out until you have at least skid plates. Not sure if you're from around here, or been off road in the mountains before, but it's all rock, and rocks will mess up your new ride quickly! Dadunkindude can help you with mods if needed, he's added skids and hooks.

As far as trails go, the Pat, properly equipped, will handle most trails rated up to 3 on www.traildamage.com, a great site with thorough reviews, pictures, GIS and map data for a LOT of trails in CO and some other western states. Back when I had my Pat, I tended to push it quite a bit. You can see this in my photos section. Robert.Zearing, Dude, BSCB and I have done runs together, chronicled in our group threads.

Yesterday I went up to the top of Webster Pass from the Montezuma, north, side. I was in my Cherokee but you could handle the old mining road in a FD-II with some good driving. Bumpy with rocks. The only problem areas for a Patriot FD-II are the crossing of the Snake River and the last switchbacks on the pass.

The river crossing is easy but a little deep and I think that a FD-II can handle the depth. The problem with the switchbacks is they are tight but also very dug out. Think of a motocross track where the turns get shaped by the motorcycles all using the same line.

But do not try the road that connects the Webster Pass road and goes to Radical Hill. It is very rough and rocky. There were a few places in less than a mile where even in a modified Cherokee I was having to really pick my lines to get over the rock slabs and get through the boulders.

Yesterday I went up Deer Creek to Radical Hill again. Same place as in my pictures from last year. This time I took my Cherokee.

If you want a challenging trip for a FD-II you should try this trip. The herd of Mountain Goats were waiting at the top again. There must be something on a vehicle that they like to taste. Several were even licking my tires.

I then continued up the road to the Middle Fork of the Swan but there is one spot that I think was more difficult than a FD-II could handle. Eventually I had to turn back because of a large snow drift blocking the road.

am looking to do a cb mount like you did
wondering what gauge metal you used?
thinner easier to work with yet flexes,
    thicker vice versa

Is there anyway you can send me the Hi-res version of the pic where my wheel is way off the ground so I can send it in to JeepFreak?

    Thanks!
