: pat 4 or liberty 6?
thunk 03-30-2007, 01:58 PM greetings, i was at my local dealer yesterday looking to find a patriot to see live and in the flesh. they didn't have any :( but the sales guy was definitly trying to persuade me to go the liberty route because of the V6. i am not so sure. i like the liberty, but i like the MPG of the patriot a whole lot more. and if they ever do come out with a patriot desiel...that would be way cool. any thoughts on the patriot 4 vs the liberty 6? oh yeah, and i was bummed that the liberty limited doesn't come with a manual trannie.

tcperconti 03-30-2007, 02:13 PM It is not surprising that the salesman would try convincing you to buy a Liberty. There seems to be a glut of Liberties on dealer lots (based on what I've seen), and Patriots are still in short supply.
I have a Limited Patriot 4x4 w/CVT and it has plenty of power for my tastes. I may eventually do some light towing, probably not do any off-roading.
I am delighted with the 2.4L 4 Cyl./CVT combo.
If possible you should testdrive a Liberty and Patriot back-to-back so that you can compare them yourself.
Belveder 04-05-2007, 10:14 PM Is the smart dealer going to contribute few $$$ towards your gas fill up when gallon will hit 5$ .Please, let us know what he/she says.
CPAJeeper 04-05-2007, 10:43 PM Neither the Patriot or Liberty will win any races. If you need the V6 for towing capacity, I would say to go that route. If you don't need the towing capacity, I would save the MPG's and go for the Patriot. I just traded my Cherokee with the 4.0 six on a Patriot with the 2.4 CVT. I don't feel an incredible difference in performance for daily driving, except my Patriot does much better on gas!!

CPA is right, if you don't need the six, don't get it. The patriot has great performance from this 2.4 4cyl. Save yourself the bucks on fuel and stick it to the oil companies. I've only put 300 miles on mine so far and I have the 5 spd manual, does better then I ever thought it would, but a 2.4L is an above avg. size for a four cylinder. Your going to use the power of the six maybe 5 times a year if your not going to tow, and you'll use the power of the four almost every day. ;) Just some food for thought.
Just an aside...since the 2008 Liberty has been shown, deals will probably be available soon to get rid of the remaining 07's. You might get a KJ at a Pat price.

One of the main reasons I'm getting a Patriot is for the improved gas mileage over the Liberty. My 2004 Liberty Limited, while my favorite vehicle I've ever owned, is very thirsty. Sure, the 3.7L V6 is powerful, but at what cost? I don't off-road...I wanted the 4 X 4 capabilites mostly for going in the snow. Those of us that live in the Land Of Taxes (a.k.a New York State) are being told to expect $4/gal gas prices later this driving season. That is reason enough for me!
srothfuss 04-06-2007, 09:58 AM I like what Tmax is saying.... Liberty = bad MPG
Bob Bednar 04-06-2007, 11:09 AM Yup - 127,000 miles on my Liberty (got a 2002 in June 01) and ONCE I topped 20 mpg. Most of the time it's in the 18-19 mpg range. Someday I'll sit down and figure out how much I've probably spent on gas over the past 6 years........ The Patriot is looking better and better.
tcperconti 04-06-2007, 11:34 AM Obviously lots of assumptions, but...
Liberty: 127,000 miles / 20 mpg = 6350 gallons * $2.50/gal. = $15,875
Patriot: 127,000 miles / 25 mpg = 5080 gallons * $2.50/gal. = $12,700
Difference: $3175 over 6 years (not factoring in the price difference between the 2 vehicles)
BigDuke6 04-06-2007, 12:11 PM I like what Tmax is saying.... Liberty = bad MPG
All Jeeps except the Patriot and Compass = bad MPG. But, I will never part with my Wrangler. I do want a Pat so I can have some offroad capability, good looks, good mpg and those 4 little letters on it: J E E P
dougep 04-06-2007, 01:26 PM My local dealer still has two 2006 Liberty Rubicons. Sticker $25,600. I walked in and said, hey how much, and his first offer was....$18,800! Nearly $7000 off sticker. Plus they were offering 0% for up to 72 months!
But I still chose my Patriot, for better gas mileage.

He better take $7000 off the sticker price. Jeep doesn't make a liberty Rubicon. ;)
thunk 04-06-2007, 02:28 PM yeah...i think everyone here makes a good point...the MPG definitly adds up. currently i have an '98 subaru that has ...not sure...2.4L ? and it goes just fine, nad gets good mileage. although i like the subby's, the patriot seems like the best next car for me.

If you meant Wrangler Rubicons, $18,8 is a screaming deal. If you meant Liberty Renegades, I have no idea if that is a good deal or not. But, it probably is.
I am in the mood for at least one rig that gets good gas mileage and can go offroad.
dougep 04-06-2007, 03:22 PM Yeah, yeah, Renegade, that's the ticket....
