Did anybody put the big dogs in the back yet, I just looked a green Patriot and was worried the big dogs wouldn't be able to stand up in the back?

My Greyhound (same height as my mothers German Shephard) was able to fit in the back easily.

I beleive a German Shepard should fit fairly easily... now you may need help getting a couple Newfoundlands back there though.

Ok-Good, I'm still torn between the Patriot and the Wrangler 4dr. Gas milage is weighing heavly on me.

Unless you are considering the Wrangler Unlimited with the Hardtop, I'd rule out the wrangler for transporting a dog.

We have a 2000 Wrangler Sahara with the Canyon package and dual tops and it is painful to drive that anywhere with the 15 to 16 mpg that it gets. I'd expect with the rear seat removed on a 2 door Wrangler (with Hardtop), you'd have plenty of room for a large dog. I can't speak for the Unlimited, though.

I'll let you know how well my 90 lbs. boxer fits.

Hi all, here's three reasons why we purchased the Patriot:

BatmanX

The black/golden (Bell) is just over 7 months.
The yellow/golden (Twig) is 3 months and 2 days (born on X-mas)

Accident - can you post a pic with both of your dogs in the back with the seats down? It is the main reason we are ordering a Patriot.

Love those Goldens....and the one in the middle is just as cute! (but you have to educate that one...so it costs a little bit more to raise)...

She is actually kind of small for a lab...65lbs to be exact....I got her 13 and 1/2 years ago from a breeder in Sauquot?? New York (near the middle of the state) when I was living in Troy, NY going to university....

Congrats

Thanks...she LOVES going for a ride....I don't quite understand it because she goes to sleep within one mile from home and stays asleep until the vehicle stops....she even goes and lays down as soon as the engine is started (very safety conscious :D )...

What is it with these retrievers and cars?? Make sure you post some pics of the two of them in the vehicle...some people on the forum have two dogs and want to make sure they both fit...

Yes, she likes to coordinate her fur color with the color of her dog bed and her 4X4....:)

Don't think our dogs are going to have too much of a problem fitting anywhere in my new Pat. They probably can both fit in the glove compartment. 10 lbs COMBINED.

Haha....I guess when they are in the cargo area, they make the Patriot look like a Commander!....I wish my dog was that size...especially when I have to lift her in the back (she has arthritis now and can't run or jump very well anymore)...

Roxy (lab cross) and I are waiting for our Patriot. She's seven months and still growing, so we need the room. Especially when my daughter brings along a friend. The Ford Focus has simply become too small.

Anyone with a dog bought one of those doggie barriers? A friend of mine has one in her Chevy, and will let me try it out in the Pat when I get it...hers is adjustable, so I should be able to size it down to fit the Pat.

If you have one, what kind did you get, how much was it, and how doyou like it?

I've got two black labs to consider...one of whom goes to work with me every day...

I'm guessing my back seat will be down all the time to. Not sure my English Mastiff is gonna be able to get himself in there otherwise =).

Of course now he will be able to since he's only a puppy at 5months old. I just may have to give him one of my shoes and keep him occupied. O.o

I. too, placed a lot of weight on how a vehicle would suit my dog (a Welsh Springer Spaniel - see the avatar!) and knew that I was really buying "dog car" for her! She is 43 pounds, and we had my cousin's 55 pound aussie-x in as well and no probs - both fit easily.
By the way, my dog (nicknamed among other things, the 'vomit comet') already christened the back-passenger side door, floor mat and seat - it cleaned up easily, just wiped down the door and the YesEssentials fabric came out unscathed, no stain or smell after (she LOVES eating dirt and grass on hikes!!).

I have a 25 lb Blue Heeler/Border collie and a 9lb Doxie. My problem will be keeping them in the back, which they won't stay. I have to buy a pet barrier to keep them from getting into the groceries. (they go everywhere, except to work). It's nice to see that a big dog can fit back there and have room to move.

too bad no is making a vehicle just for dogs-
so many of us keep looking.
My two dogs- one Cardigan Corgi, one terrier mix like the dog Sandy in orphan Annie fit in the back behind a grate. I was worried it was too small- but they seem fine and really like it.

Took them both to Vermont this past weekend in a friends Honda Pilot and they were in heaven- very roomy for dogs and people I just don't think the
gas milage can compare.

Love those Goldens! What do you have to do for maintenance of their coats? I have a senior yellow lab (13 yrs, 9 mths now) and I am thinking of getting a Golden Retriever next time around.

Do you have to clip their coats regularly or just brush often or?? I guess they must shed as much as my yellow lab eh?

Here's my two dogs.

Do your goldens stay in the back??? Mine jumped over the backseat and into the driver seat by the time it took me to close the hatch, open the garage door and walk around to the front... Looks like I will be buying a "gate" to keep her in the back...

My golden is a long haired (red/brown) she sheds a TON. But I found a two-way brush at Petsmart called the "Bamboo" It has two "rakes" on it, one brushes out the undercoat VERY WELL, when I go against the grain. The other side has somewhat of a sharp inside edge (will not cut you or the dog) but it is great for getting knots out of the tail and mane. Best 15 bucks I ever spent.

Homac That's quite a crew you have there. I put my German Shorthair Pointer and Irish Setter , about 70 lbs each, in the back of mine for long trips all the time. That's exactly why I had to add the roof rack for luggage. Also had to put up a dog barrier to keep them off the leather. It's a little less rommy for them than my Cherokee was but they move around less which is really safer for them anyway. I just hate having to clean the windows from all the licking! They seem to have a little bit tougher time getting in than the Cherokee. The floor is a little higher, but much easier to clean! There's alot less headroom in the cargo area as well. If I remember correctly there is 10 cubic feet less cargo room than in the Cherokee, however the front seats didn't fold forward in the Cherokee either. That made it quite difficult to fit my upright bass in (had to lay the front seat down and squeeze it in using a time tested, make no wrond move, motion), with the patriot I just lay the seats forward and throw it in! Weren't we talking about dogs...I love dogs. My Patty loves dogs!!! Bark

I have a Blue heeler and my son has 2 border collies - both have thier distinct traits. How is the mix? ran into a rancher in SD who actually uses them to herd cattle. he has both a bh and a bh/bc mis and he says the mix is no good at herding - it;s not mean enough.

I have an 85 lb Australian Shepherd. Plenty of room. I put a dog bed in the back and connected a leash to the spare tire bracket. That way he can be hoooked to his car harness and he can't jump in front. Safer in case of a wreck, too.

my 100lb Shepard fits get in the back even when he had to share it with a suite case on a 1100km road trip. he did however find to need to climb over the seat and onto my friend who was stuck riding in the back seat every time we stopped for gas. and on short trip with just myself and the wife he gets the whole back to himself with the seats folded :D

Good to know that the Patriot is Lab rated :)

Patriot passed the "lab test" Alright!

My Swedish Vallhund (cross between Siberian Husky and Welsh Corgi at 52# fits nicely in the front seat and defies family members that feel she should "take a back seat" to them. But then, I need not lock my car with the "dog on duty"

Glad to hear that others take their dogs nearly everyplace with them. Mine would rather sit thru a 4 hour meeting in the car, than sit at home alone. And for those of you in hot country, I have a two-hour cooler I have designed for keeping the inside of the Patriot not warmer than 85 degrees when it's in the sun at over 110!
