jlobaugh 11-18-2011, 08:44 PM And then I found a job.. Keeping people from hanging out in front of the drugstore.
Seriously, those are some great pictures and some good times. I wish there were more places around here to play off-road.
renospatriot 11-18-2011, 10:38 PM Wow, here in Jersey I drive over mountains also, mountains of garbage. Your lucky. Great video, must of taken some time to put together. If you don't mind me asking what is the name of the first two songs of the video?
the_jeep_now 11-18-2011, 11:51 PM MrMischief, awesome slide show. There is some very beautiful scenery in CO. I admire that you find time to enjoy the nature and your Jeep.

Whoa! I first saw her in a viral video at least 4-5 years ago. Looks like she's come a long ways since then.

is that a bumper from trail-gear? i bought a 97 before my deployment. and looks nice man me and friends go to strawberry pass, rbicon and fordyce quite often in northernish CA
ColoradoMan 12-21-2011, 05:59 PM yeyyyy i saw my jeep :) great pictures! now time for winter offroading ;)
MrMischief 12-29-2011, 03:18 PM Sorry I haven't seen this in awhile.... The bumper on my Jeep is from Bestop and is their "HighRock" line. I think that's the only line they have. Not sure though. Either way I'd say don't buy it. I don't like bumper in front of my tires as it impedes my approach angle. It doesn't line up correctly on the bottom so all the bolts to hold it on can't be installed, the metal is thin, so it's light weight, but there are videos online of the bumper bending when a winch is pulling on it. It's also nearly impossible to put a license plate on it while the bumper is mounted to the jeep. I only have this bumper because it was on the Jeep when I bought it. My wife then bought me the roller for my birthday, which basically has forced my hand into keeping the bumper.
ruiner54 03-07-2012, 07:12 AM Wow, that was a phenomenal adventure...I am envious. That makes me want to move to Colorado. I live in a region with a lot of wooded hills, but no mountains. Does the Patriot do ok offroad in stock condition? I have done a few trails with snow and mud and it had no trouble

I guess it all depends on what you're comparing it to. The only thing in the same class as the Patriot thighs might do as well or better would be the Range Rover Evoque. If the Evoque is better it's due to the Evoques traditional transmission and Ford Ecoboost motor. Land Rover claims the Evoque has class leading ground clearance of 8.5" and Jeep claims the Patriot has class leading ground clearance of 9.1". So maybe they're not in the same class? When it comes to price tag they certainly are not. Nothing I would cross shop against the FDII Patriot can compare to it.
Now if want to open yourself up to a wider range of vehicles, the Patriot is easily out performed off road by the 2012 Wrangler 4 door. The FDII Pat has a MSRP of what.... $19,725?? A bottom end soft top 4 door wrangler will cost you $26,445. The Wrangler has more cargo space (46 cu ft with seats up, 86 with seats down compared to the Pats 23/53), more towing capacity(3500 vs 2000), more power (285 vs 172), more aftermarket upgrades.... Basically more of everything. Fuel economy on a Wrangler is rated at 16/21, the FDII is 20/23. The Wrangler also rides more rough and has more wind and road noise (although this is hugely improved over previous Wranglers). The Wrangler will also retain it's value better.
Ultimately it depends. The Patriot is easily defeated off road by a Wrangler Unlimited, but nothing that you'd truly compare to a Patriot can beat it. IMO the Achilles' heel of the Patriot is long steep rough climbs.
Without having a proper low range the Patriot suffers from not being able to move up steep inclines from a stop as well as vehicles with a true transfer case. I blame this on a combination of high gearing (compared to vehicles with transfer cases), lack of power/torque and I am suspect of the CVT although I have no proof a traditional automatic would be any better.
This weakness for inclines is overcome with more speed and no stopping, which is fine if it's a smooth surface. Toss in some big pointy rocks and you're risking breaking something.
If I had a Patriot that did a lot of duty as an off road vehicle I would have a winch on the front of it simply for the climbs. Problem is you'd probably have to custom fab something up due to the lack of aftermarket support. Everything else the Patriot is great.
