Sales of Dodge Calibers worldwide are leveling off while interest in the Jeep Compass continues to build, according to February sales figures released today.

New-car dealers outside of the U.S. sold 2,268 Dodge Calibers, the least amount for that model since last October. But they also sold 965 Jeep Compasses, the sixth straight month-over-month increase since the model made it worldwide dealers last August. Compass sales are expected to increase significantly when a diesel version becomes available in the second quarter.

The Caliber and Compass are made along with the Jeep Patriot at the DaimlerChrysler assembly plant in Belvidere. With 3,600 workers, the plant is the largest manufacturing employer in the Rock River Valley. The Patriot was launched in late December and hasn’t made it to international dealers.

With increasing U.S. competition, DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler Group has been looking more and more at international markets for sales growth. Together, international dealers sold 3,233 Calibers and Compasses, the second best total since the lineup replacing the Dodge Caliber was started in January 2006.

Just for the record: This information appeared in the Rockford Register Star on March 14, 2007. It might have appeared elsewhere, but that is where I found the story.
