: What''s you fav product for waxing...
soflatechie 08-17-2011, 09:12 PM Ok folks, I have had my 09 Pat for a month now, and I have washed it a couple of times with Maguire's wash and wax. It does a great job.
However, I eventually actually wax it and was wondering what product you all use to wax your riot, and how often you wax.
Thanks in advance...
Afmcronnie 08-17-2011, 09:20 PM If I have time I use Maguires cleaner wax. If not, I use Turtle Wax Ice. I FIND time at least once a month in the summer, and at least twice in November. Then not again until march.
mrg455 08-17-2011, 09:31 PM Turtle Wax Ice Sunthetic spray, super easy to apply, even easier to wipe off. can wax the pat in about a half hour.
MiddleburgJeep 08-17-2011, 09:54 PM Alright man I used to be all about keeping my car clean that i tried every product on the market and this is what I found out. The best car wash is Meguirs Wash and Wax the yellow stuff, the best wax is Meguirs Cleaner Wax i've found it works better than their Gold Class Wax which is supposed to be their top of the line product. I only have the time and patience to wax about once or twice a year, so every-time I was the Patriot after I dry it I spray and wipe it down with Turtle Wax Ice Detail Spray, it is a synthetic and does a great job of keeping the paint slick and smooth in-between yearly waxes. The Ice Spray Detailer is great for keeping the wax finish and if you do it after every wash it keeps the paint smooth, and it helps to keep black trim pieces from fading like the black piece on top of the bumper.
Afmcronnie 08-17-2011, 11:00 PM Turtle Wax Ice works GREAT on all the black trim. I mean ALL of it. Window trim, mirror housings, everything. If it's black and plastic and outside I put Ice on it. I use Meguirs Detail Spray all the time. I have to go outside to smoke, so I wipe down different areas of the Jeep every day. Not because it needs it, because Im bored. lol I use the detail spray to clay bar stubborn spots and baked on bug guts before I wax. The Ice has about zero cleaning component, so if I have water spots I just use the cleaner wax. I only use soap a couple times a year. I just rinse it down and wipe it off and rinse again. The ice does a good job as a top coat a couple weeks after a wax job with the paste. For the interior I use Lucas Oil interior detailer after I go over everything with one of those lint rollers. I dont use anything but a damp cloth on the leather/vinyl seats. The tires I use different stuff all the time. I havent found anything I really like. Im open to suggestions on that, and how to renew the raised white letters. They get torn up pretty easy.

Thats great!! and a great way to be productive for those 2 or 3 minutes, i love your multi-tasking!!!

Wesley's Bleche-Wite (now Black Magic Blech-Wite (http://www.blackmagicshine.com/bleche-wite-tire-cleaner.php)??) made my OWLs look new again after my letters faded into oblivion. I tried a paint pen, but that only made the letters white for a week. After using Bleche-Wite, I'll gladly by another set of OWLs.
Don't let it get on the wheels or paint, and make sure to wash it all off again after you use it

Thanks. I'll check that out. I tore up a couple of the letters 4th of July on some rocks at Lake of the Ozarks. Had to check out the FDII system. Now I remember why most off-road oriented tires are black sidewalls.
soflatechie 08-18-2011, 09:18 AM Awesome answers folks. I have been using Meguire's Wash and wax so far, and it works really well. I may try Meguire's cleaner wax as well. I will let you know the results.
MrMischief 08-18-2011, 09:45 AM What''s you fav product for waxing...
Sandy Hansen makes a very good wax you can use at home... :D
Okay on subject. I used Turtle Wax Ice on my bike. I used the Ice wash, polish and spray wax. Man that bike looked good after that. This was when I used to ride every day, rain or shine (even the unexpected snow storm). So during the day my bike was always parked uncovered and how my work's parking lot is, it always faced the same direction. I'd say it only took 2 months, before I noticed that my paint on the sun side of the bike had faded a lot. It wa's a bright shiny metallic orange bike, but now one side is bright and shiny, the other is more orange creamsicle now.
I've washed and detailed all of my cars before, I typically wash them by hand and I always used Meguiars products, never had a problem. On the bike I thought the ICE product line looked to be easier since there's a lot of textured plastic bits I wanted to avoid getting a traditional wax on. Maybe I applied it wrong, or overestimated the amount of protection it provided, but I won't use Ice again. Luckily it was just my bike rather then an entire car.

Z-AIO on the sides and hood, Z-CS on the roof, hood and black plastic, and Z-8 after washing to keep things spiffy.
mrg455 08-18-2011, 10:02 AM for the glass, i havent seen anything better then invisible glass, you have to use a micro fiber towel (not just paper towel) but it does a fantastic job, its a little pricey compared to windex, but it is well worth the extra couple bucks. its all i use now (for home and auto)

Concur. I also like the spray can better than the pump bottle. It seems to work better on cutting the bugs and sap.

You'd be hard pressed to find anything better than any of the Adam's polishes that are out there. Everything from their All-Purpose cleaner to their Buttery Wax is pretty much the best stuff I've ever seen. It's not as simple as the ICE products so many people swear by, but the results are ten fold.

jloffermann 08-18-2011, 01:54 PM Too be honest I wax with old skool turtle wax and that little round pad then some special rags. I do it once every couple of months because of the CA sun and working with fuel vapors and dust in the air etc... but I wouldn't go crazy for products there is a reason turtle is still around and for wheels mothers polish is the way to go.:pepper:
Meguiar's Quik Detailer.
Since I'm not very skilled at professional waxing, it's easier for me applying QD after washing the car. It smells really good as well.

I get 3-4 weeks beading and protection out of this product. It can be layered and applied while surface is wet.
It's a product I can't live without. At 27.00 a gallon, it would last a single person a year if you washed once per week and applied.
For my full premium details I use.....

Not easy to apply or take off but lasts for 5 months on a properly prepped surface. I use it on wheels and glass as well.
It's the best deal for the money. One 15.00 tin lasts me a year. It goes on very thin.

Could you elaborate on "properly prepped surface"? Also, some years ago I dated a girl who did detail work at a Porsche dealer. I would let her do side jobs on Porsches in my garage on weekends. She had some kind of oil/polish she inadvertantly left in my beer fridge one day. I had noticed her using this stuff on plastic parts, so I tried some on the sidecovers of my motorcycle. It brought the color back on those plastic side covers better than anything I have ever seen. I thought she said it was some kind of palm oil. I have never been able to find a comparable product. Do you have any idea what that stuff was? She said it was very expensive and had to be kept cool. Some kind of German black magic voodoo oil? Just hype to be able to charge Porsche guys $300 for a garage wax job?
Justin Murphy 08-19-2011, 11:03 PM Zymol (not to be confused with the WalMart cleaner wax made by Armor All) has a lot of waxes in that price range and........even higher. They have to be kept cold. Mobile detailers that use it bring it on ice in a cooler. It's heat activated so you use you bare hands to apply.
Here is one of there high lines.......

Afmcronnie 08-19-2011, 11:40 PM Wow. $8400? It was in an unmarked squirt bottle, but I thought the name she said did start with a Z. No wonder she came back to get it so quick! lol I almost feel guilty for using it on the side covers of that old Triumph...

It might have been Zymols leather feeding oil. I believe it was about that much before it was really known about.
Aerogt01 08-20-2011, 02:30 PM Could you elaborate on "properly prepped surface"?
A surface is properly prepped when it has been washed, clayed, decontaminated, and polished if necessary. Basically, there is nothing in between the paint and the wax being applied that would interfere with adhesion.
Do you have any idea what that stuff was?
There is actually quite a number of products that will give you that result. To me it sounds like something from the SwissWax line. What is it you want to accomplish? I use Ultimate Protectant on the black plastic parts of the Jeep and it works very well.

And you nailed properly prepped! You know what you're talking about and that is so good to hear. Most just wash and wax and get mad when there is no more beading. Beading.......now that's a whole other discussion!
There are many other factors that participate in LSP (Last Step Protection) durability. Climate, sun, garage kept, plus many others are just examples.

mrJeepr44 08-21-2011, 12:04 AM Nice review, and I'm glad to hear it's good. I got it and used it about 2 months ago just to get something on the jeep to protect it. I was torn between Meguire's ultimate wax and NXT 2.0 I did put it on the wheels as well.... They clean very easy now :)

soflatechie 08-27-2011, 05:38 PM Ok folks, based on the many answers to my original question, I decided to use:
..
...
...
wait for it....
Turtle Wax Ice
So today I washed my riot with Meguire's Wash and wax, and then applied Turtle Ice. Here is my humble opinion.
First, applying it is a snap, much easier than a traditional paste wax. I only used a very small amount, and was able to apply it to the car in about 10 minutes. I waited another 5 minutes, then wiped it off with a dry cloth. Total time was about 15 minutes.
The result? Well, you can see in the pictures below. The shine is pretty impressive, and also did a great job on all of the non-metal exterior like rear bumper, mirrors, and rack.
I can't help but think that even though it leaves the car nice and shiny, that it won't last nearly as long as a regular paste wax. Time will tell, but even if it doesn't, the short time it takes to apply means I can use it every couple of weeks without taking an entire afternoon to do.
So far I am sold on the product...
:D
the_jeep_now 08-27-2011, 05:44 PM Looks nice! I just used Ice for the first time on my wife's PT and it looked amazing. It has been a week and it still shines. I haven't used it on my Patriot yet. Maybe tomorrow.
NHPATRIOT 08-27-2011, 06:37 PM Meguiar's Gold Class products are what I use. Wax, Soap, Tires, etc... IMO best consumer detail products on the market.
MiddleburgJeep 08-27-2011, 08:09 PM NICE JOB!! Soflatechie!! Black always looks good clean and waxed. A friend of mine who has a black Acura and loves to keep it detailed uses a product by Turtle Wax called Black Box which is a detail kit only for black paint. Don't know how clean you like to keep your Patriot but he uses this product once a year to take out all the blemishes and tiny scratches that you notice on black paint.
soflatechie 08-27-2011, 09:08 PM thanks for the tip I will check it out...
Ignatz 08-27-2011, 09:30 PM Hmm, nobody mention Nu-Finish. I've used that with good results for a number of years.
That said, I was squeezing Ignatz up a dirt road (I use the term loosely) and must have had an altercation with some barbed wire on the passenger side. I thought it was just brush. It left some long but only surface scratches. I bought some of Turtle Wax's color match and it worked just wonderful. :) I've always been a doubter on those scratch-fix products, but this did the trick. I suppose I'll have to refresh it every so often, but I'm initially very impressed.

The TW colored polish does work to hide scratches. The crayon thing is useless but the polish itself works good. You are right however that it will need to be done more than once. It is not permanent.
However, if you use it to hide the scratches and then put a couple good coats of wax over it that helps it to stay longer.

Not a bad idea :notworthy: as long as it doesn't dry white in the scratch and accent it.

If you can't see the color coat and these scratches aren't extremely deep (don't catch the edge of your fingernail) you can actually permanently remove them with a compound. Ultimate compound would give you good results (other brand's products should work, I simply don't have experience with them).
What it takes:
- clean work area
- work on a small section at a time
- put a little bit of passion into it
Ultimate Compound on a cotton applicator (the little round ones in the detail section of your local parts store) will work great for this. Take your time, and use a quality microfiber to wipe off. Remember, you are actually leveling the paint around the scratch, so if it's really deep the least you can do is use the compound to round over the edges to make it less noticeable. I have done this several times on customer's and my own cars, and sometimes the scratch is still there, but nobody can find it unless they know exactly where to look!
Make sure to follow up with a finish polish like SwirlX, and a good wax!

You will love it. I works so well on windows and wheels as well.
mrJeepr44 10-08-2011, 04:41 PM Following Justin Murphy's advice, I wanted to get a nice polish to put on the Jeep, under the NXT 2.0 wax I have. I was torn between Meguires Ultimate Polish, and Nu Finish.
Ultimate polish is advertised as essentially being a polish that will create a shine, and to use it before waxing.... exactly what I was looking for. Nu Finish on the other hand, is a polish that is intended to be the final and only product used. It is supposed to do what a wax does. Because of that, I figured I'd try the Ultimate Polish.
I love Meguires products, and I have heard a lot of good things about the Ultimate line of products, but that polish was a PITA to remove. It says in big bold letters "DO NOT ALLOW PRODUCT TO DRY." I am so used to letting things dry to a haze then wiping.... this polish does NOT work that way. I found myself needing to wipe it off almost as soon as I had put it on, and I was still having difficulty removing it. Knowing I had a lot of area to cover, and really not wanting to spend all night buffing out polish marks, I threw in the towel after completing the front fenders, bumper, and hood. I returned Ultimate Polish and bought Nu Finish.
Nu Finish was very easy to use, and is even safe enough to be applied in direct sun light (A plus in case I miss a spot and it dries on). The shine is great, and from what I have read it is supposed to be extremely durable and long lasting.
Since it is a polish, and because I want to seal it with a wax, I will be going over the Nu Finish with the NXT 2.0 wax later today. I've read of someone else trying this and getting very good results

MoeBucks 10-08-2011, 06:30 PM I use all Meguiars, all the time. Their paint cleaners, polishes, and waxes. The biggest thing is to wash your car once a week (if possible), and to continuously use Ultimate Quick Detailer, and a car duster to keep particles from sticking to your paint. Even if it rains, all I have to do is run water on my car and it looks spotless. Wax AT LEAST twice a year, but the more the merrier.
mrJeepr44 10-10-2011, 03:20 PM All right, I used Nu Finish, then waxed it with the Mequires' NXT 2.0 I had. Results are pretty darn good. It's still overcast outside, but I finally used a decent camera that does it some justice

Not really a fanatic about washing and waxing the vehicles. But I do want to keep the plastic/vinyl as black as possible and I know that most waxes and polishes will leave white fade marks on it. This product can be used to wash and wax the car without worrying about the surface. It looks easy and it's green too. "Too Easy" to be true?
new jeeper 04-04-2012, 01:36 PM I have been using ProtectAll for my motorcycle for over a year and very happy with this stuff. It is great for paint, chrome, plastic/rubber trim, glass, leather, etc. It is also very easy to apply and buff out. So when I use this on my Pat, I don't have to worry about getting it on the trim and turning white - one of my biggest pet peeves. :pepper:
The only thing this doesn't do is leave a shine on your tires. Did I mention this is great for the plastic/rubber trim? For best results, you should clay before applying.
It is sold at Walmart in the RV section. They should also put it in the car section to sell more of this awesome stuff.

Really nice and shiny. Now the $64,000 question. Does it cause any issues with the plastic and vinyl trim? Cause if not it would definitely be worth trying based on your results.:)
mrJeepr44 04-06-2012, 02:12 PM I used Nu Finish and LOVE it, but it will mark up the plastic trim if you don't get it all off.
This is Nu Finish and NXT 2.0 on a cloudy day:

Your Pat' looks nice also. I read somewhere that products with any petroleum based ingredients will be detrimental to the trim. I used to use Astrosheild way back when and that was really hard on the black parts. Nu-finish must have some of the same ingredients.
kb1gig 04-06-2012, 02:38 PM Yes, it will make a mess on the plastic and trim. I used a painter's blue masking tape and taped it off. LOL!
Metaxa 04-06-2012, 02:50 PM I want a lustre, not a ten on a scale of ten shine.
I just want a deep, rich looking sheen...if that makes any sense.
I use (have for years and years) a product called RV, Boat & Aircraft wax.
P-38-Q, made by BAF Industries in KY.
website is prowax.com.
Good stuff, they offer lots of different products but, for me, the RV, boat and aircraft Wax is the shizzle!!
It doesn't go white on trim either.
Ignatz 04-06-2012, 10:13 PM Does anybody know anything about Simoniz Instant Shine spray? Does that protect like wax or just give it a clean and shine?
The MIL's Saturn has Simoniz System 5 and I don't want to wreck it by using an incompatible product. I wouldn't have spent my $$ on the System 5, but bugs and other crud come off amazingly easy. :)
Earthworm51 04-06-2012, 10:48 PM Poor Boys polish sealant. One of the members on this site posted about it last year. Great Product.
shmoeman 05-08-2012, 07:43 AM I chose the Turtle Wax Ice based on reviews here. I did not want white pastey marks all over the black molding (and there sure is a lot of it on the Jeep). I didn't trust myself to be super careful and not get any on it. The Ice not only doesn't leave marks on the molding, it makes it shine just like Armor All. One drawback, is afterwards, it seems to attract dust a lot faster. It's kind of the same with using the tire shine spray for the wet look. Great at first, but after a day it looks dirty.
